We’d only just turned off the main road into Saundersfoot when the sat-nav decided we were clearly in need of a detour through someone’s farmyard. One minute we were following the polite little arrow, the next we were bumping along a gravel track with a very surprised sheep staring us down. By the time we reversed out, laughing like idiots, the sun was already high and the sea air had that clean, salty edge that makes you breathe deeper without thinking.

The Paddock sits just back from the beach, tucked behind a low hedge with a little gravel drive that crunches underfoot like it’s pleased to see you. Our first impression was of light—wide windows catching the afternoon sun and a garden that felt more like an extension of the cottage than a separate space. We dumped the bags, kicked off our shoes, and that was pretty much the end of any grand plans.

The next few days unfolded exactly as they should when you’re this close to the sea: slowly. Mornings began with coffee on the patio, steam curling up while we watched gulls wheel over the rooftops. From there it was a short wander down the lane to the beach, shoes in hand, the sand still cool beneath our feet. We never managed anything more ambitious than finding a good spot to sit and let the tide do its thing. Sometimes we’d walk the length of the shore toward the harbour, pausing to watch kids poking about in rock pools, but mostly we just drifted back when the sun got too warm.

Back at the cottage the day stretched out in the best way. There was a little wooden bench under the hedge where the light stayed gentle even at midday, perfect for stretching out with a book you’d been meaning to finish for months. I kept telling myself I’d go for a proper explore—maybe follow the coastal path a bit further—but the pages turned, the shadows moved, and somehow the afternoon slipped by without protest. My partner dozed in the deck chair, occasionally murmuring something about making lunch that never quite happened. We lived on toast, ice cream from the village shop, and the occasional bag of chips eaten straight from the paper on the garden wall.

What surprised me was how little I missed having a schedule. Normally I’m the one with a list, quietly fretting if the day feels too empty, but here the emptiness felt like the point. The mishap on the way in had set the tone: plans were optional, and the real pleasure was letting the place set its own pace. Evenings brought that soft, golden light over the garden, the sound of waves just audible if you stayed quiet, and the simple satisfaction of doing almost nothing at all.
