About Saundersfoot
Off we trundled down the A40 from Carmarthen, me at the wheel with the sat-nav chirping away like an overexcited budgie, dead set on getting us to our little holiday bolt-hole near Saundersfoot. The kids were in the back, bickering over who got the last Haribo, when disaster struck – a rogue sheep decided to play chicken right in the middle of a narrow lane near Llandissilio. I slammed on the brakes, heart in my mouth, and we all burst out laughing as the woolly culprit sauntered off, none the worse for wear. "Welcome to Wales," I chuckled, shaking my head. Typical start to a family getaway.

By the time we rolled up to this single-storey barn conversion tucked away in the Carmarthenshire village of Efailwen, just on the Pembrokeshire border, the sun was dipping low and painting everything golden. I'd been buzzing with anticipation all week – visions of lazy beach days and no emails pinging my phone. And blimey, first impressions? Spot on. Nestled in this cracking beauty spot, it looked every bit the cosy retreat we'd booked for a chilled-out couple's break (well, with the kids in tow, but you know how it is). Stepping inside, the charm hit us straight away – those high vaulted ceilings giving it an airy feel, and the log burner in the inglenook just begging to be lit on a drizzly evening. The lounge was pure comfort with squashy seating and a flat-screen TV hooked up to full Sky package – perfect for sneaking in a footie match while the little ones nodded off. Next door, the country-style kitchen had cream units, a big dining table for pancake mornings, and a sink window framing the rolling Welsh countryside. It screamed "relax and forget the world."

We wasted no time unpacking and cracking open a bottle of plonk while the kids explored. Next morning, it was a short hop to Saundersfoot beach – all golden sands and calm waters, ideal for paddling and building wonky sandcastles. We wandered the harbour, grabbing fresh crab sandwiches from a shack that were so good I nearly proposed to the fisherman. Afternoons blurred into gentle chaos: me burning toast in that lovely kitchen (cottage life, eh?), the kids chasing each other round the garden, and us parents stealing moments on the comfy sofa with a brew, watching the world go by. One evening, we lit the log burner, rustled up a stew, and played board games till late – proper family stuff that makes you realise how knackered you were back home.

There was this quiet moment on the third day, sat by the window with a cuppa, hills stretching out forever. I caught myself thinking, "We rush about too much – this is what it's about, innit? Simple stuff like this." No grand plans, just us lot pottering about, dodging the odd shower with ice creams from the village shop near Pentlepoir. A daft game of frisbee on the beach turned into a muddy scramble, leaving us in fits and caked in sand – hilarious, really.

Packing up felt bittersweet, but Saundersfoot and this gem of a barn had us hooked. If you're after a relaxed family escape with a side of cottage quirkiness, you can't go wrong here. Can't wait to go back.
