About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive up to Bala – that winding A road from Llandrilo had me gripping the wheel tighter than usual, especially when we hit that cheeky patch of roadworks just outside town. Naturally, I’d left packing till the last minute, so we were already running late, and then the heavens opened with one of those classic Welsh downpours. The windscreen wipers were working overtime, and I was convinced we’d arrive looking like drowned rats. But as we crested the hill into Bala, the clouds parted just enough to tease a glimpse of the lake shimmering below, and my heart lifted. This was it – our little escape in Snowdonia was about to begin.

Pulling into the enclosed yard of this gorgeous barn conversion cottage felt like stumbling upon a secret hideaway. It’s right on the edge of town, tastefully done up with a modern vibe that makes you feel right at home, complete with a private hot tub just begging for a soak. Everything you could need – shops, pubs, cafes – is a five-minute stroll away, and Bala Lake’s watersports are practically on your doorstep, 500 metres down the path. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a cuppa, and I was already buzzing about the walks ahead.

Day one dawned bright and breezy, perfect for a jaunt around Llyn Tegid, or Bala Lake as we locals call it. We ambled along the shoreline path, the mountains of Snowdonia rising dramatically across the water – Arenig Fawr looking ever so tempting. The air was crisp, alive with the chatter of walkers and the occasional splash from paddleboarders. We pushed on to the Pallt y Capel trail, a gentle two-mile loop with views that had me stopping every five minutes for photos. Lunch was fish and chips from a lakeside van, eaten on a bench while watching the world go by. Pure bliss.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour, doesn’t it? Next morning, we’d planned the climb up Arenig Fach, that rugged little peak a short hop from town. I was all geared up, full of that daft optimism that comes with a fry-up breakfast. Halfway up, the mist rolled in thick as pea soup, turning the path into a slippery adventure. Visibility? Zilch. We pressed on laughing, but when the rain started lashing sideways, common sense kicked in. Sod’s law – back down we trudged, soaked to the skin but grinning like idiots. Sat in the hot tub later, bubbles fizzing around us, I couldn’t help but reflect: sometimes the best holidays aren’t about conquering peaks, but rolling with the punches. It’s those soggy retreats that make you appreciate the cosy cottage even more.

Undeterred, we switched to lower-level rambles. The Mawddach Trail’s northern end starts nearby, a flat(ish) five-miler hugging the lake’s edge through woods and wetlands. Even on a drizzly afternoon, it was magical – spotting herons and buzzards, the town’s chatter fading behind us. Another day, we tackled the Rhiwlas Woods loop, all ferns and babbling streams, perfect for wellies when the showers hit. Bad weather forced improv, like a windswept yomp to the lake’s weir, where the roar of the water drowned out our moans.

By the end of the week, we’d clocked miles of muddy paths and misty vistas, the cottage our trusty base. Snowdonia’s walks are brilliant like that – forgiving enough for whims, wild enough to thrill. If you fancy ditching the car for proper legwork adventures, Bala’s your spot. We’re already plotting a return, raincoats packed.
