About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive up to our little holiday cottage in Snowdonia, Wales – a proper trek from the Midlands that had me white-knuckling the steering wheel more than I’d care to admit. We’d set off full of beans, playlist blasting some cracking indie tunes, but halfway through, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us down a narrow lane that looked more like a sheep’s personal runway than a road. Branches scraping the car roof, a sudden downpour turning everything to mud – I was convinced we’d end up in a ditch, starring in our own episode of Countryfile gone wrong. But we made it, emerging into this stunning valley just as the sun peeked out, hearts racing with that mix of relief and giddy anticipation. What would the place be like? Cosy hideaway or damp disappointment?

Pulling up to the cottage – a sweet, traditional stone affair with a welcoming front porch – my worries melted away. First impressions? Spot on. It was everything you dream of for a lazy Welsh getaway: compact but comfy inside, with a cracking garden that backed straight onto open countryside. We dumped the bags, cracked open a brew, and just... exhaled. After months of rushing about like headless chickens at work, this was our chance to do bugger all, and boy, did it feel good.

The joy of those days was in the nothing. Mornings started slow, lounging in the garden with a cuppa, watching mist lift off the hills while the birds put on a free concert. I’d flop into one of the cushy chairs with a dog-eared paperback – some light thriller I’d been meaning to read for ages – and lose hours without a care. Lunch was whatever we fancied rustling up from the local shop in Bala, just a few miles down the road: cheese on toast, maybe a pasty if we were feeling fancy. Afternoons? More of the same. Lounging about, feet up, letting the world slow to a crawl. The garden was a dream – wildflowers nodding in the breeze, a bit of lawn perfect for dozing under the sun (when it deigned to shine). One day, I even managed a cheeky nap there, waking up to the distant bleat of sheep and feeling like I’d cracked the secret to life.

We did venture out once or twice, mind – a gentle wander to the local pub for a pint and a natter with the regulars, or a short drive to Bala for a mooch around the lake. Llyn Tegid’s massive and serene, ideal for a lazy stroll or just sitting by the water with an ice cream, watching boats bob about. No need for heroics; we skipped the white-water centre and Zip World – brilliant as they are – in favour of proper unwinding. There’s something magic about Southern Snowdonia’s paths too, but ours were the gentlest ones, ambling along with views that made you stop and stare.

Looking back, that gentle self-reflection hit me on the last evening, pint in hand in the garden as the sun dipped low. I’d spent the week achieving precisely nowt, and it was the best holiday ever. In a world that never stops, doing very little in a place like this? Pure bliss. We’re already plotting a return – same cottage, same sloth-like pace. If you’re after that, get yourself here.
