About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive up to our little Welsh cottage in Snowdonia – or Eryri, as the locals rightly call it. My wife and I had been buzzing with anticipation for weeks, dreaming of crisp hill air and proper downtime away from the daily grind. But typical us, we hit a snag right at the start. About halfway there, just past Welshpool, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us down a narrow lane that was more puddle than path. We ended up with the car half-stuck in mud, laughing like idiots as I tried to reverse out without embedding us deeper. A passing farmer in a Land Rover towed us free with a grin and a “Mind the sheep next time, bach!” Crisis averted, and we arrived just as the sun dipped behind the hills, hearts racing but in the best way.

Pulling up to the cottage, bang on a mile from Dinas Mawddwy and Mallwyd, it was love at first sight. Tucked among those rolling southern Snowdonia hills, this three-bedroom beauty promised cosy contemporary comfort for the two of us – plenty of space to spread out, even if we’d imagined filling it with kids one day. No grand entrance, just that welcoming glow from the windows as dusk settled. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of red, and flopped on the sofa, taking in the views that stretched out like a postcard.

The next few days were pure bliss, the kind of holiday where you forget what day it is. Mornings started with lazy brews on the patio, watching mist lift off the hills, then we’d lace up our boots for a gentle hike up Foel Benddin. It’s not the tallest peak, but blimey, the climb leaves you puffing and grinning, with panoramas that make you feel tiny in the best possible way. We’d pack cheese butties and flasks, turning it into a proper picnic affair – me spilling tea down my jumper, her teasing me about my “mountain man” beard that never quite grows.

Afternoons were for cottage chaos, the joyful sort. We’d potter in the kitchen, messing up a Welsh rarebit that somehow turned into the best we’ve ever had, or light the fire and binge on telly with blankets piled high. One evening, a sudden downpour trapped us in, and we ended up dancing around to old tunes, slipping on the rug like daft teenagers. It was those simple pleasures – the clatter of rain on the roof, the warmth of the Aga, sharing daft stories – that made it magical.

I had a quiet moment of reflection one sunset, sat on the hill with a cuppa, pondering how we’d let life get so hectic back home. This place stripped it all back, reminding us why we’re together: the laughs, the quiet companionship, the joy in mud and mishaps. We wandered over to Dinas Mawddwy for a pub lunch – proper pie and a pint – chatting with locals about their tales of the hills. No need for big plans; the Mawddwy valley’s gentle trails and that sense of being properly off-grid did the trick.

By the time we packed up, I was already plotting our return. Snowdonia’s got that pull – rugged yet restful, chaotic in the cosiest way. If you’re after a chilled couple’s escape, this is your spot. Just double-check the sat-nav.
