About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive up to Snowdonia – me behind the wheel, sat-nav chirping away, and a boot full of wellies and wine. We’d just passed Machynlleth when the heavens opened, turning the A470 into a proper river. I misjudged a puddle the size of Lake Vyrnwy, and splash – we arrived looking like drowned rats, with the kids giggling in the back. But honestly, that little mishap only made the anticipation sweeter. As we crested the hill into Cwm Cywarch Valley, the clouds parted just enough to reveal those craggy mountains looming like ancient guardians, and the Afon Cywarch snaking below. Heart lifted instantly – this was going to be magic.

Pulling up to the barn conversion, my first impressions were spot on: a cosy, recently done-up spot nestled in the rural Welsh countryside, all welcoming and full of character. It’s got this light, open-plan kitchen-living area that feels like a big hug, with a breakfast bar for lazy mornings and a log burner that had us toasting marshmallows by teatime. Bedrooms are comfy across two floors, including a ground-floor king with its own en suite – perfect for us lot. But the real stars? That private hot tub out back and the garden setup screaming family fun: swing set, slide, and football goals keeping the little ones busy while we grown-ups slobbed out.

The joy of it all was doing sod all, really. No grand hikes or conquering peaks – just proper slowing down in the best way. First morning, I cracked open a book on the sofa, rain pattering the windows, while the kids thundered around the garden, turning the swing into a pirate ship and the slide into Everest. Hubby fired up the charcoal BBQ for lunch (sausages and burgers, nothing fancy), and we ate al fresco, feet up, staring at the dramatic views. Afternoons blurred into hot tub sessions – bubbling away as the sun dipped behind the rocky mountains, a glass of plonk in hand. Pure bliss. One evening, I even managed a whole chapter of my novel without interruption, the log burner crackling and the valley’s peace wrapping around us like a blanket.

There was this gentle moment of self-reflection one quiet dusk, sat in the garden with a cuppa, watching the kids chase a football across the grass. Life back home’s a whirlwind – deadlines, school runs, the lot – but here? Time stretched out lazy and lovely. I caught myself thinking, why don’t we make more space for this? No pressure, no plans, just being. The property made it effortless: that open space indoors for board games when the weather turned, the garden begging for picnics and downtime. We wandered a short path down to the river once, skimmed stones, but mostly? We stayed put, recharging.

By the end of the week, we were all a bit reluctant to pack up – faces rosy from fresh air and fiddling about. If you’re after a holiday that’s all about unwinding in Snowdonia’s stunning embrace, this is it. Slow days in Cwm Cywarch? Sign me up for next year already.
