About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive up to Bala – sat nav on, tea flask in hand, belting out some dodgy 90s tunes with the missus and the kids. We’d been dreaming about this Snowdonia getaway for months, picturing cosy nights by the fire and epic mountain views. But about 20 minutes from Bala, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided to photobomb the road, and in my panic, I took a wrong turn down a narrow lane that looked like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. Twenty minutes of reversing around blind corners later, we finally stumbled into town, laughing our heads off and vowing never to mock farmers again.

Pulling up to our brilliantly located detached townhouse – just a stone’s throw from Bala’s buzzing restaurants, bars, cafes and shops – we were gobsmacked. Tucked away in a quiet corner, this hot tub haven was perfect for our clan, and the fact it welcomed up to three dogs had our mongrel madhouse over the moon. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of local ale, and that hot tub became instant hero status after the drive.

But here’s the thing – the real magic of Bala isn’t the obvious stuff. No, our best bits came from getting properly lost, stumbling on hidden gems by accident. Day one, we parked up near Llyn Tegid (that’s Bala Lake to you southerners) for a stroll, but instead of the main path, we veered off down a unmarked track by the River Dee. Blimey, what a find! A secluded wild swimming spot, water crystal clear, with kingfishers darting about like feisty blue bullets. The kids splashed like loons while we picnicked on cheese butties, feeling like we’d gatecrashed paradise. No crowds, just us and the otters eyeing our crisps.

Next morning, aiming for a quick dog walk before brekkie, we took a “shortcut” through the woods behind the high street. Lost? Absolutely. But it spat us out at this tiny, forgotten picnic area overlooking the lake’s marshy edges – a proper birdwatcher’s dream. We spotted lapwings doing their wobbly flights and even a heron having a moody pose-off. Sat there with flasks of tea, I had one of those daft reflective moments: rushing around life back home, we never stop for this. Proper reset button, that did.

Afternoon brought more serendipity. Hot tub soak turned into a planless wander towards the hills, and oops, we ended up on a sheep-dotted trail to a viewpoint I swear isn’t on any map. Panoramic Bala, all misty peaks and glassy water, with not a soul in sight. We laughed about our sheep fiasco from the drive, toasting with hipflask whisky. Evening? Back to the townhouse for a slap-up curry from a spot down the road, dogs snoring by the fire.

Getting lost in Bala’s back lanes and lake fringes turned our holiday into pure gold. Those off-the-beaten gems? They’re the ones that stick. If you’re after Snowdonia soul without the selfie sticks, grab a similar pad here – just watch for woolly roadblocks.
