About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive to Aberdyfi – that winding A493 hugging the Dyfi Estuary like it was afraid to let go. We’d set off from Shrewsbury full of beans, sandwiches packed and the sat-nav chirping away, but about halfway, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided our lane was prime grazing and planted itself bang in the middle. Cue 20 minutes of gentle honking and me hopping out to shoo it with a flap of my jacket. The farmer eventually rocked up on his quad bike, chuckling, “She’s a stubborn one, that ewe!” By the time we rolled into the village, we were late, windswept and starving – but boy, was the anticipation worth it.

Pulling up to our tasteful little apartment right along the foreshore, my heart did a little flip. Tucked on the edge of this buzzing harbour village, it promised direct access to a pebbly beach perfect for picnics or just gazing at the wildlife drifting along the estuary. First impressions? Spot on. Cosy inside, with views that had us grinning like kids at Christmas. Aberdyfi’s golden sands stretched out nearby, and you could practically smell the sea salt mixed with chip shop aromas wafting from down the road. Ideal base for couples like us, itching to tackle Snowdonia’s southern trails.

Day one dawned bright – proper blue skies, the kind that tricks you into thinking summer’s arrived early. We laced up our boots and headed straight for the Dysynni Valley path, a gentle riverside ramble just a short stroll from the door. Birds flitted about, the estuary sparkling, and we picnicked on those stones by the beach, watching seals bob in the distance. Bliss. I even managed a half-decent sketch of the hills in my notebook – rare for me, the eternal doodler who can’t draw a straight line.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour, hasn’t it? By afternoon, clouds rolled in like uninvited guests, and the heavens opened. Our planned hike up Cadair Idris got scrubbed; instead, we dashed back to the apartment, dripping and laughing, brewing tea while rain lashed the windows. “Typical!” I groaned, but secretly loving the drama. Next morning, it was worse – horizontal gales whipping off the Irish Sea. No chance for the cliff-top walk to the golf course with its championship views. We improvised with a sheltered estuary stroll, hoods up, dodging puddles and puddles of sheep poo. The wind howled, turning our faces ruddy, but those moody skies over the hills? Magic. We spotted herons fishing and even a fox darting through the dunes – proper wildlife spotting without leaving the village.

One evening, as the rain eased to a drizzle, we braved a loop around the harbour, past the sailing club where windsurfers were still battling the waves like lunatics. My other half pointed out a canoe group paddling out – tempting, but not in this lot. Back at the apartment, cosy with fish and chips from down the road, I had a proper moment of reflection. Here I was, mid-40s, faffing about in wellies instead of my desk job grind. Why don’t I do this more? The weather had thrown curveballs, sure, but it forced us to slow down, appreciate the wild beauty on our doorstep. Snowdonia’s southern edges aren’t just for the fair-weather folk – they’re for souls who’ll hike through a downpour and call it an adventure.

We left with muddy boots, fuller hearts, and a promise to return – weather be dashed. Aberdyfi, you cheeky beauty, you’ve got us hooked.
