About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive up to Snowdonia that crisp autumn morning – leaves turning all those fiery shades of orange and red, like the landscape was putting on its best party frock for the season. Me and the missus had piled into the car in Manchester, full of beans about our little getaway, but about halfway in, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided our windscreen was the perfect spot for a nap. Cue an emergency stop, a bit of honking, and me muttering about Welsh wildlife having it in for southerners. We laughed it off, though – nothing a quick detour through the golden glades couldn’t fix, and by the time we neared Betws-y-Coed, the anticipation was bubbling. Would the place live up to the pics? Would the hills greet us with that proper Snowdonia magic?

Pulling up just two miles from the village heart, right on the edge of Eryri National Park, we were gobsmacked. First impressions? Spot on. This first-floor apartment was a stylish little haven – all open-plan living with a cosy vibe, a massive en-suite super-king bedroom that could twin up if needed, and those huge shared gardens begging for a stroll. Autumn had dressed it perfectly: trees framing the windows in rust and amber, and a chill in the air that made firing up the wood burner feel like pure luxury.

We wasted no time diving into the seasonal treats. First day, we wandered into Betws-y-Coed, crunching through fallen leaves underfoot, grabbing steaming hot chocolate from a café while the River Conway rushed past in frothy glee. The air was that perfect nippy – cold enough for a woolly hat, but sunny enough to warm your cheeks. We hiked the easy Fairy Falls trail nearby, the cascade thundering louder with autumn rains, mist rising like dragon’s breath. I slipped on a wet rock (classic me, always the clown), but it just led to giggles and a pub lunch of cawl and bara brith back in the village – proper warming fuel for the soul.

Evenings were bliss. We’d cook up a storm in the open-plan kitchen – think hearty stews with local lamb, windows fogging from the steam while the sun dipped behind the hills in a blaze of copper. One night, we ventured to the Swallow Falls, just a short drive away, where the water roared over mossy rocks, spray catching the low light like jewels. The season made it electric; fewer crowds meant we had it almost to ourselves, just the rustle of leaves and distant sheep bleating their approval.

Looking back, that gentle self-reflection hit me on our last morning, sipping tea in the garden as dew sparkled on the lawns. Autumn in Snowdonia stripped everything back – no summer hordes, just you, the turning leaves, and that quiet reminder to slow down. We’d arrived frazzled from city life, but left recharged, coats heavier with memories. If you’re chasing that cosy, colourful escape, this corner of Wales in the fall? It’s chef’s kiss. Can’t wait to go back.
