About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive up to Snowdonia – a proper British road trip, complete with that classic moment where you realise you’ve taken a wrong turn just as the satnav throws a wobbly. We’d set off from home full of beans, sandwiches packed and Spotify blasting some indie folk playlist to get us in the mood for Welsh hills. But halfway through, near Blaenau Ffestiniog, I missed a junction and ended up on some twisty back lane that had me white-knuckling the wheel while my other half laughed and called it “character building”. By the time we arrived at our tucked-away loft conversion in Dolgellau, hearts were racing a bit, but oh, what a first impression! Perched in a peaceful spot within Snowdonia National Park, it looked just perfect – those sweeping views of the Rhinogydd Mountains from the shared garden had us grinning like kids. And being in a Dark Skies Reserve? We were already buzzing about stargazing later.

The place itself was a gem: an architecturally clever loft with a cosy open-plan living area, underfloor heating that felt like a hug after the drive, and a king bedroom that was all welcoming vibes with its modern ensuite. We dumped the bags, cracked open a cuppa in the fully fitted kitchen, and gazed out at the hills, anticipation building for some proper walking adventures. Snowdonia’s calling card, after all – those rugged paths and epic vistas.

First day, the weather gods smiled: bright blue skies, not a cloud in sight. We laced up our boots and headed out for the Precipice Walk, just a short hop from the door. It’s this cracking three-mile loop with sheer drops (don’t look down if you’re me), wild goats scampering about, and panoramas over the Mawddach Estuary that make you feel tiny in the best way. We picnicked on a ledge, wind in our hair, feeling invincible. “This is why we do holidays,” I said, cheese butty in hand.

But day two? Classic British weather roulette. We’d planned the Torrent Walk, a gentle riverside stroll through ancient woods to a thundering waterfall – perfect for a damp day, or so we thought. Cue horizontal rain and a gale that turned our waterproofs into sails. We battled on, laughing as we slipped on muddy steps, puddles splashing up to our knees. By the end, soaked to the skin but buzzing from the roar of the falls, we dashed back for hot showers and Freesat telly. It forced us to switch plans – instead of a longer hike up Cadair Idris (saved for sunnier times), we did a shorter loop around Dolgellau’s woods, dodging showers and spotting red kites overhead.

That evening, as the clouds parted for a spectacular stargazing session in the garden – the Milky Way like a smudged paintbrush across the sky – I had a quiet moment of reflection. Holidays like this remind you life’s too short for perfect plans; it’s the soggy socks and spontaneous changes that make the memories stick. We left Snowdonia with muddy boots, fuller hearts, and a promise to return for more weather-whipped walks. Proper tonic for the soul.
