About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive up to Corris last month – what was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from Machynlleth turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat nav decided to play silly buggers halfway through, rerouting us down a single-track lane that felt more like a sheep’s personal runway than a road. There we were, me white-knuckling the wheel, my other half yelling “slow down!” as a flock scattered in every direction, and our well-behaved dog, Monty, barking his head off from the boot. We arrived at the charming ground-floor apartment in the heart of the village, hearts racing and covered in a fine layer of Welsh mud from a hasty verge-park. But honestly, that chaotic entrance only made the first impressions all the sweeter.

Pulling into the designated parking spot for our one car – phew, it fitted – we were already buzzing with anticipation. Corris sits right on the outskirts of Eryri National Park, and as we tumbled out, the air hit us like a crisp welcome: that fresh, piney scent mixed with a hint of rain on the breeze. Perfect for a couples’ getaway, we thought, lugging bags and Monty’s lead while giggling about our near-miss with the sheep. Stepping inside, it was like the universe saying, “Right, you’ve earned this.” The living/dining room wrapped us up straight away – inviting, cosy, with an electric fire flickering on and a telly ready for some mindless unwinding after whatever adventures we fancied. The dining bit seats four, but for us two (plus dog), it was ideal for scoffing toast and plotting the day over tea.

First impressions? Spot on. The kitchen had everything – kettle on, hob heating, and I whipped up bacon butties in no time while Monty sniffed approvingly at his bowl. Then, collapsing into that king-size bedroom with its own TV... pure bliss. Serene doesn’t cover it; after the drive’s madness, it felt like sinking into a cloud. We spent the evening there, fire glowing, Monty sprawled out, just soaking in the quiet. No grand plans yet, but peering out at the dark outlines of the hills, I could already picture tomorrow: a gentle wander along the Corris Craft Centre trails, maybe popping to the village pub for a pint, or simply ambling up to the old railway path for views that make you forget the world.

Reflecting on it now, that messy arrival was a gift, really. It stripped away any preconceptions and left us open to the magic of the place. In a world that’s always rushing, this little retreat in Gwynedd reminded me to laugh off the hiccups and embrace the simple joys – like a dog-hair-covered sofa and mountains on your doorstep. If you’re after tranquil Welsh escape, hunt out something like this in Corris. We’re already plotting a return, minus the sat nav drama.
