About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive to Barmouth – our sat-nav decided to play silly buggers just as we hit the twisty A496, sending us on a wild detour through some sheep-dotted back lane that felt like it was auditioning for a horror film. Heart in mouth, I gripped the wheel while my partner laughed nervously about ending up in a field. But then, suddenly, there it was: the glittering Mawddach Estuary opening up before us, Barmouth’s colourful seafront winking in the distance. All that pent-up arrival buzz melted into a massive grin. We’d made it to this cracking little holiday apartment on the edge of Eryri National Park, and from the off, it felt like the perfect spot to properly switch off.

It’s a smart two-bed setup, dead cosy for us two but with room for mates or nippers if we fancied. Perched in the harbour town, it’s only a short stroll – about half a mile – to that glorious sandy beach where you can flop out and watch the waves without a care. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a brew, and just soaked it in: the salty sea air drifting through the windows, the gentle hum of gulls, and those epic Snowdonia views peeking over the rooftops. No grand plans, mind – this trip was all about doing bugger all, and boy, did it deliver.

The garden was the real star, a tucked-away sunny patch with a couple of loungers and pots overflowing with whatever hardy Welsh flowers thrive in the wind. I’d park myself there most mornings with a pot of tea and a dog-eared paperback – some lightweight crime thriller I’d been meaning to crack for ages. Hours vanished without me noticing, the only interruption being the odd ferry chugging across the estuary to Fairbourne. We’d wave at it lazily from our perch, debating if we could be arsed to hop on one day. Spoiler: we never did. Why rush when the joy’s in the dawdle?

Afternoons blurred into the same blissful rhythm. A saunter down to the beach for a paddle in the shallows – the water’s bracing, but that’s half the fun – then back for cheese on toast in the kitchen, feet up on the sofa with the window flung wide. One evening, I caught myself staring at the clouds rolling over the hills, thinking how I never do this at home. Work’s always nagging, emails piling up, but here? Time stretched out like toffee. I had this quiet moment of reflection, chuckling at my daft self for needing a Welsh bolthole to remember how good it feels to just breathe. No hikes up Yr Wyddfa, no manic itineraries – just us, pottering in the garden, reading till our eyes drooped, and maybe a gentle evening walk along the promenade to watch the sun dip behind the mountains.

Even the rain – because, Wales – added to the charm. We’d huddle inside with mugs of hot chocolate, listening to it patter on the roof, feeling smugly cocooned. By the end of the week, I was so chilled I barely recognised the frantic city version of me. If you’re after a proper unwind in Snowdonia, this is it: lazy days, estuary views, and zero FOMO. We’re already plotting a return.
