About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive to Dyffryn Ardudwy – we’d been buzzing with excitement about our Snowdonia getaway, windows down, singing along to some terrible 90s playlist, when suddenly the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly. It rerouted us down a narrow lane that looked more like a sheep’s personal runway than a proper road. We ended up nose-to-nose with a farmer’s tractor, laughing our heads off as we reversed for what felt like miles. But oh, what a payoff when we finally pulled up to this cracking first-floor apartment, right in the heart of Eryri National Park. Sleek and contemporary with that coastal vibe, it felt like our little slice of Welsh heaven from the off – sea glimpses from the balcony, and all the local shops, the Cambrian Line station, and a sandy beach just a stroll away.

First morning, I was up at dawn, peering out at the mist rolling in off the coast, proper Snowdonia style. We’d planned a big hike up into the hills, but the weather had other ideas – lashing rain that turned the paths into slip-and-slides. Chuckling to myself, I thought, typical British holiday, eh? Always packing for four seasons in one day. So we pivoted to a gentler beach walk along the sands nearby, hoods up against the drizzle, dodging waves that snuck up cheekily. The air was that fresh, salty tang you only get by the sea, and spotting a seal bobbing about felt like a bonus prize.

By afternoon, the clouds parted like they’d had a telling-off, and we legged it towards Harlech, just a few miles up the coast. That medieval castle looms dramatically, but we skipped the touristy bit for a proper clifftop trail instead – wild winds whipping our faces, gorse bushes scratching our legs, but the views over the dunes and out to sea? Stunning. We paused for soggy sandwiches, feeling alive in that raw, elemental way only a good walk can deliver. Me, I’m usually a fair-weather rambler, admitting it now – the kind who’d rather lounge with a brew – but something about those sudden sunbeams breaking through made me push on, grinning like an idiot.

Next day brought more weather roulette. Blue skies lured us out for a loop around the local trails, meandering through Eryri’s foothills with buzzards overhead and wild ponies eyeing us suspiciously. Then, bam – hailstones the size of marbles! We sheltered under a gnarly oak, brewing tea on my trusty flask, plotting our escape. It forced us onto a low-level coastal path instead, puddles splashing everywhere, but we discovered hidden coves we’d have missed otherwise. That night, back in the apartment, feet up and dripping, we toasted with local cider, swapping stories of near-misses on the slick rocks.

Staying here was a masterclass in rolling with Wales’ mercurial moods – hikes shortened, rerouted, but richer for it. It reminded me that the best adventures aren’t the ones you pin down on a map, but the ones the weather scribbles over. If you fancy trading brollies for binoculars, this spot’s your ticket to Snowdonia magic.
