About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive up to Snowdonia that crisp autumn morning – sat nav on, tea thermos in hand, and me feeling all smug about beating the weekend traffic. Then, about halfway through the twisty A5, disaster strikes: a rogue sheep decides to photobomb the road right in front of us. Brakes screech, heart leaps, and there’s me yelling “Baaa-d timing!” to my other half while we wait for the farmer to round up his fluffy fugitive. Classic Wales, that – keeps you on your toes, doesn’t it?

By the time we rolled into Betws-y-Coed, the Gateway to Eryri, I was buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation. You know the feeling? Windows down, lungs full of piney air, wondering what joys await. And oh, what a first impression. We pulled up to this charming ground-floor apartment, just a couple of miles from the village heart, and it was love at instant. Tucked away with shared gardens that begged for a potter about, it had three versatile bedrooms – perfect for us lot not needing to clamber up stairs – plus modern living spaces that felt cosy without trying too hard. Families or mates on an adventure break would thrive here, but me? I was already plotting my do-nothing masterplan.

Truth be told, Snowdonia’s got endless thrills – hikes up Swallow Falls, a gentle stroll along the River Llugwy, or nipping into Betws for a slab of Welsh cake from the bakery. But this trip? Nah, we embraced the joy of bugger all. Lazy cottage days were the name of the game. First morning, I cracked open my battered copy of a Gavin and Stacey novel (fitting, eh?), plonked myself in the garden with a brew, and just… watched. Leaves drifting lazy-like, birds chirping their own mellow soundtrack, the odd squirrel scampering past like it owned the place. My partner joined with her sketchpad, and we barely moved for hours. It was bliss – no agenda, no rush, just that slow Welsh magic seeping in.

Afternoons blurred into more of the same. We’d fire up the kettle for endless cups of proper builder’s tea, lounge in the living area with its squishy sofas, maybe nibble on cheese toasties while debating nothing much. One day, I even had a cheeky nap under the garden parasol, waking to the soft patter of rain on the hills – Snowdonia’s way of saying “stay put, mate”. Light humour in the air too: me pretending to be a hibernating bear, grumbling about the “horror” of fetching more biscuits from the kitchen. We did venture out once, just a five-minute amble to the River Conway for a pebble-skipping session, but even that was half-arsed, dissolving into giggles and garden-bound retreat.

Looking back, it’s funny how I always pack for action – walking boots, maps, the lot – yet the real highlight was switching off. In a world that never stops, this little apartment was my permission slip to slow right down. No FOMO, just full-on peace. If you’re after that rare treat of holiday idleness amid stunning scenery, this is your spot. We left recharged, lighter, and already plotting a return. Proper tonic, that was.
