About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive up to Barmouth last month – we’d packed the car with enough snacks to feed a small army, but halfway through the A5, the satnav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a scenic detour through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel. “This better be worth it,” I muttered, as the kids in the back started their chorus of “Are we there yet?” Turns out, it was – emerging from those twisty roads, the Mawddach Estuary sparkled below us, and my heart lifted. Snowdonia was calling, and we were buzzing with that pre-holiday anticipation.

Pulling up to our top-floor apartment in a grand old Victorian block on Marine Parade, I was chuffed to bits. It’s one of those split-level spots, up a shared stairway and a cheeky short flight inside, which had us huffing a tad with the luggage – note to self: pack lighter next time. But stepping into the heart of it? Pure joy. The galley kitchen on the lower level was a dream for lazy self-catering, with a dishwasher to save us from washing-up woes. Next door, the shower room with its massive walk-in was perfect for rinsing off any imaginary beach sand. Up a few more steps, two family-friendly bedrooms awaited: the master with a comfy double and single, gazing over rooftops to the mountains, and the front one with bunks framing those epic sea views. We claimed them quick, then flopped into the sitting room’s leather recliners, staring out at Barmouth beach and the Irish Sea. Blimey, what a view to wake up to.

We’d come to Snowdonia for the big adventures, but honestly? The best bit was doing sod all. Our days melted into this glorious rhythm of slowing right down. Mornings started with brekkie at the dining spot on the landing, mugs of tea in hand, watching dog-walkers on the beach below while the fresh sea air wafted in. No rush – we’d potter in the little shared garden area out back, me with a dog-eared paperback, the kids sprawled on blankets building Lego empires or doodling. It was heaven. Lunch was whatever we rustled up in the kitchen – cheese toasties one day, pasta the next – eaten cross-legged on the sitting room floor, debating nothing more taxing than which film to binge next.

Afternoons? Pure laziness. I’d curl up in a recliner with my book, letting the waves’ rhythm lull me into a doze, while the family played board games at the table or just gazed out the window, spotting fishing boats chugging along. We did venture out once or twice – a gentle stroll to the harbour for fish and chips, the salty breeze whipping our hair, or a meander to the nearby beach where the little ones poked at rock pools. But mostly, it was about unwinding. No hikes into the national park (though it’s right there, tempting), no cycling marathons – just us, slowing down in this cosy home-from-home.

One evening, as the sun dipped over the bay, painting everything golden, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home is non-stop – work, school runs, the lot. Here, staring at that endless sea, I realised how rare it is to just *be*. No plans, no pressure. We laughed about my satnav fiasco over a homemade curry, then retreated early to our beds, lulled by the distant waves. Snowdonia’s wild beauty was the backdrop, but the real magic was those lazy cottage days. Can’t wait to go back and do even less.
