About Snowdonia
Pulling up, we were gobsmacked. It was this cosy wooden cabin tucked into the hillside, all rustic charm with a welcoming porch and those massive windows framing the mountains. First impressions? Pure magic. The air was crisp, the views over the valley stopped us in our tracks, and unloading the car felt like stepping into our own Enid Blyton tale. We wasted no time settling into cottage life chaos. The kids claimed the bunk beds straight away, turning unpacking into a pillow fight frenzy, while I fumbled with the log burner – first holiday attempt at fire-starting, and let’s just say it took three goes and a singed sleeve before we had a proper blaze going. Laughing at my own daftness, I realised how rarely we switch off like this; no screens, just us lot making a right mess and loving it. Next morning, we wandered down to the nearby Llechwedd Slate Caverns, just a short hop away. Clambering through those echoing tunnels on the zip line tour was a hoot – the kids whooped like banshees, and I clung on pretending I wasn’t secretly petrified of the heights. Back at the cabin, simple pleasures took over: brewing tea on the Aga-style cooker, rustling up bacon butties, then piling into wellies for a family tramp up to the local woods. We built dens from sticks, skimmed stones on a babbling stream, and watched buzzards circle overhead. One afternoon, chaos peaked when the heavens opened – typical Welsh weather – and we all dashed inside for board games and hot chocolate, turning a soggy hike into an indoor fort-building epic. Evenings were bliss. We’d barbecue on the deck (braving the drizzle with brollies), toast marshmallows over the fire pit, and stargaze from the hot tub – yes, it had one, bubbling away like a private spa in the hills. I had a quiet moment soaking there one night, kids tucked up, reflecting on how these daft, messy days recharge us more than any posh resort ever could. No grand plans, just family giggles and mountain air. By the end of our week, we were hooked on that relaxed Snowdonia vibe – the cabin’s snug nooks, the easy walks to quiet spots like the Rhinog trailhead nearby, and the sheer joy of unplugged time. Driving home, sheep jam forgotten, we were already plotting our return. If you fancy proper family downtime, this is the spot. |
