About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive up to our little holiday cabin near Blaenau Ffestiniog last autumn – the leaves were turning that gorgeous coppery gold, and the air had that crisp bite that screams “cosy nights in”. We’d set off from Cheshire full of beans, playlist blaring, but about halfway through, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided to photobomb the A5, causing a proper tailback. I was stuck behind a tractor for what felt like hours, drumming my fingers on the wheel and fantasising about shepherd’s pie for tea. Typical, eh? But as we finally wound our way into the hills, the anticipation built – Snowdonia in October is magical, all misty valleys and that fresh, earthy scent after the morning rain.

Pulling up to the cabin, my heart did a little flip. It’s one of those snug, wooden retreats tucked into the landscape, with a veranda perfect for wrapping up in blankets. First impressions? Spot on. The autumn sun was dipping low, painting the surrounding woods in fiery oranges, and you could almost taste the woodsmoke from nearby chimneys. We dumped the bags and cracked open a flask of tea, just soaking it in. No crowds, no queues – just us and the season’s gentle hush.

The time of year made everything ten times better. Days were short but stunning, so we made the most of the golden hours. A brisk walk up to Llechwedd Slate Caverns was pure joy – the autumn chill sharpened the senses, and the crunch of leaves underfoot drowned out the world. Underground, it was eerie and thrilling, with echoes of the miners’ history bouncing off the walls, but emerging into that slanting October light felt like stepping into a painting. We even hopped on the Ffestiniog Railway for a jaunt towards Tan-y-Bwlch; the steam puffed lazily against the turning foliage, and spotting red kites wheeling overhead was the cherry on top. Lunch in the carriage – pasties and strong tea – hit different when you’re wrapped up against the breeze.

Evenings were the real treat, shaped by that early dusk. We’d light the fire (bliss after the day’s nip), rustle up a stew with local lamb, and play cards till our eyes drooped. One night, a soft drizzle pattered on the roof, turning the world misty and mysterious – perfect for stargazing from the veranda once it cleared, Orion winking through the branches. No light pollution here; it’s like the season strips everything back to basics.

Looking back, that little mishap on the road was a blessing in disguise – it made us appreciate the quiet arrival even more. Autumn in Snowdonia taught me something simple: sometimes the best holidays aren’t about ticking off lists, but letting the season wrap you up and slow you down. We left feeling utterly recharged, already plotting a return for next year’s colours. If you’re after that kind of magic, pack your wellies and go now.
