About Snowdonia
Pulling up to the cabin, my anticipation was buzzing. Tucked away in a quiet spot with those classic Snowdonian views peeking through the trees, it was just the cosy retreat we’d hoped for – simple, welcoming, with a wood-burner ready to roar. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a cuppa, and gazed out at the mist rolling over the hills. Perfect. From there, it was all about getting lost – the good kind, where you ditch the guidebook and let curiosity lead. Day one, we wandered off down a unmarked footpath behind the cabin, expecting a quick loop, but it spat us out at this secret little waterfall cascading into a crystal pool. No crowds, just the roar of water and us whooping like kids. I slipped on the mossy rocks trying to get a photo – classic me, always overdoing it – and ended up soaked to the knees, pondering how I’m forever the daft one in the family. But it was magic, that hidden gem, far from the tourist trails. Next morning, we hopped in the car for a mooch around local lanes, no plan, and accidentally discovered an old miners’ trail snaking up from the village. Blaenau’s slate history is everywhere if you look, and this path led to a viewpoint over abandoned quarries that felt like stepping into another world – eerie, vast, and utterly peaceful. We picnicked there with cheese butties from the Co-op, watching ravens soar. Pure bliss, and not a soul in sight. Evenings were for more serendipity. One dusk, a wrong turn on the way back took us to a tucked-away llyn (that’s lake, for us non-Welsh folk) shimmering under the mountains. We parked up, skimmed stones, and chatted about life as the sun dipped. It got me reflecting – in the rush of daily grind back home, I forget how recharging these off-piste moments are. No Instagram hordes, just us and the wild. We capped it with a hike up a lesser-known ridge nearby, found by following a faded signpost that looked like it hadn’t been touched in years. The views back over the cabin and valley were staggering, wind whipping our faces, and we felt like proper explorers. Snowdonia’s got these pockets of wonder if you stray from the paths – our mishap-filled week proved it. Can’t wait to get lost there again. |
