About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive to Barmouth – our sat-nav decided to have a mid-Wales meltdown just as we hit the winding roads near Dolgellau, sending us on a detour through a herd of sheep that looked as baffled as we were. The kids were in the back, moaning about the delay, and I was trying to keep the peace with crisps and silly car games. But honestly, that little mishap just ramped up the anticipation. We’d been dreaming of this family getaway in Snowdonia for months, escaping the daily grind for some proper coastal cottage chaos.

Pulling into the seaside town of Barmouth felt like unwrapping a present. The salty sea air hit us first, then those first glimpses of the harbour sparkling under the sun. Our first-floor apartment was just a stone’s throw from the beach – up a communal staircase to this gem of a spot with a beautiful colour scheme that instantly made us feel at home. The open-plan living space was perfect: soft grey carpet underfoot, a lush emerald sofa begging us to flop down with the Smart TV flickering family films, and a cosy table for two (well, four if we squeezed) by the bay window with cracking harbour views. The kids claimed the sofa immediately, while I stood there grinning like an idiot, thinking, ‘This is it – proper holiday bliss.’

We wasted no time diving into the simple pleasures. Mornings started with brekkie at the table, watching fishing boats bob about, then a five-minute stroll to the vast sandy beach. Building epic sandcastles turned into a competitive sport – mine always collapsed dramatically, much to the little ones’ delight. I had one of those gentle ‘aha’ moments watching them shriek with laughter as waves lapped our toes: life’s too short not to let the chaos reign sometimes. No schedules, just paddling in the shallows and hunting for crabs in rock pools.

Afternoons meant ambling along the promenade, grabbing fish and chips from a chippy that smelled like heaven, and letting the kids burn off energy on the swings near the harbour. One evening, we even spotted seals lounging on the rocks – pure magic. Back at the flat, it was all about sinking into that sofa with hot chocolates (spilled, naturally), playing board games that descended into giggles and minor squabbles. The décor was spot-on thoughtful, making our ragtag family feel like it belonged there.

Venturing a bit further on foot, we wandered to Barmouth’s little bridge over the Mawddach estuary – a gentle clifftop path with views that stopped us in our tracks. No need for big hikes; this was relaxed Snowdonia at its best, all sea breezes and easy family vibes. Sure, there were the classic cottage life hiccups – a rogue seagull nicking a sandwich, the youngest’s endless questions about everything – but that’s what made it unforgettable.

Packing up to leave, I felt that familiar tug. We’d nailed the art of doing nowt much and loving every minute. If you’re after a laid-back family break with harbour views and beachside mayhem, Barmouth’s your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
