About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive to Tremadog – that narrow Welsh road winding through the hills, with Snowdonia’s peaks teasing us from afar. We’d piled into the car from Cheshire, kids buzzing in the back with crisps and iPads, me navigating via a dodgy phone signal. Then, classic us: about ten miles out, I missed a turning, ended up on some farmer’s track with sheep glaring at our bumper. A quick reverse and a sheepish laugh later (pun intended), we were back on track, hearts racing a bit but anticipation building. As we crested the hill into the village, those jagged mountains loomed like an old friend’s welcome, and the sea’s faint shimmer promised coastal jaunts too.

Pulling up to our first-floor apartment in the heart of Tremadog felt like stumbling into a hug. It’s one of those well-positioned spots in this quaint Gwynedd village, right on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, perfect for four of us. We parked, lugged bags up the stairs, and stepped into this homely living-dining room that screamed ‘kick off your boots and stay a while’. First impressions? Spot on – cosy without being fussy, with space to sprawl after a day out. The galley kitchen was a gem, stocked with everything to whip up family feasts, and those two bedrooms (a double and a twin) plus the spacious shower room made settling in a doddle.

Our days blurred into that perfect holiday rhythm of simple pleasures and cottage-life chaos. Mornings kicked off with brekkie chaos – me burning toast while the kids fought over the last Weetabix, plotting the day over tea. We’d head out for gentle rambles along the nearby Traeth Mawr beach, just a short drive away, building epic sandcastles that the tide claimed with gleeful inevitability. Afternoons were for Black Rock Sands, paddling in the shallows, the kids shrieking as waves nipped their toes, while I pretended not to notice the sand in my undies later.

Tremadog itself is a cracker for pottering – we wandered its tidy streets, nipped into the local for pasties and ice creams, feeling that rural buzz without the crowds. One highlight was a family hike up to the nearby woods fringing the park, clambering over rocks, spotting buzzards wheeling overhead. Pure magic, though I’ll admit the uphill slog had me puffing like an old steam train, vowing to lay off the Hobnobs.

Evenings were the best bit – back in the apartment, rustling up spag bol or curry from whatever we’d grabbed at the village shop, then collapsing in the living room for board games that descended into giggles and mild cheating accusations. One night, the littlest declared herself ‘Queen of Uno’ after a dodgy win, and we let her have it, faces lit by the telly’s glow.

Looking back, that week was a gentle nudge to slow down. Amid the packing squabbles and lost wellies, there was this quiet joy in the everyday – no grand plans, just us, the mountains, and the sea’s whisper. Snowdonia from a Tremadog base? It’s family bliss wrapped in a bit of lovely chaos. We’re already plotting a return.
