About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive to Barmouth – that winding stretch along the A496 from Dolgellau, with the Mawddach Estuary glittering on one side and those rugged Snowdonia hills looming on the other. We’d set off from Shropshire full of beans, kids buzzing in the back with crisps and iPads, but about ten miles out, disaster struck. The sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly, rerouting us down some narrow lane that pinched tighter than my skinny jeans. There we were, bumper-to-bumper with a sheep farmer’s Land Rover, me white-knuckling the wheel while my husband Dave muttered about “trusting technology again.” We finally emerged, hearts racing, just as the sun dipped low over Cardigan Bay, painting everything golden. By the time we rolled into Barmouth, I was frazzled but fizzing with that holiday anticipation – you know, the kind where you imagine cosy evenings and epic walks ahead.

Spotting the place was a relief: perched right on the harbour in Barmouth, North Wales, this stylish duplex apartment above a harbourside restaurant. We parked wonkily (another mini-mishap – parallel parking with an audience of seagulls), hauled our bags up the external staircase to the second floor, and stepped into pure bliss. Open-plan living space hit us first, all welcoming and just right for our little family of four. Plonked on the sofa by the electric fire, toes warming instantly, we flicked on the Smart TV while the kids dashed to the sea-facing armchairs, jaws dropping at the harbour views. Boats bobbing, waves lapping – it was like stepping into a postcard, minus the filter.

Hunger kicked in sharpish after the drive’s chaos, so I pottered over to the kitchen area. Everything you could need was there – from saucepans to that fancy coffee machine I’d been dreaming of. Whipped up some pasta with local crab we’d grabbed en route (Barmouth’s seafood is legendary), and we ate gazing out at the sunset over the bay. Laughter echoed as we recounted the sat-nav saga; Dave joked I’d navigated better blindfolded. First impressions? Spot on. It felt like a proper home-from-home, stylish without being fussy, and those views had us hooked from minute one.

Next morning, still buzzing from arrival, we wandered down to the harbour – literally steps away – for bacon butties and a mooch along the promenade. The beach stretched out, sandy and inviting, with the kids building lopsided castles while we sipped tea from a beachside kiosk. Popped into town for pasties from the bakery on High Street, then a gentle stroll to the RNLI station, peering at the lifeboat tales. Afternoon saw us on the Fairbourne Railway – that cute little steam train chugging across the estuary, puffing smoke and delight. Pure magic for the little ones, and a chuckle for us grown-ups watching them wave at cows.

Reflecting on it now, that messy arrival was the perfect icebreaker. It stripped away the everyday grind, reminding me holidays aren’t about flawless plans but those shared giggles over spilt crisps and daft detours. Barmouth’s got this unpretentious charm – harbour buzz, sea air, Snowdonia’s wild backdrop without the full-on hike. We didn’t venture far; no need when paradise was under our noses. If you’re after a cracking Welsh getaway for a small family, this spot’s a gem. Already plotting our return – sat-nav be dashed.
