About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive up to Snowdonia that crisp autumn morning – me behind the wheel of our trusty old estate car, packed to the gills with wellies, books, and enough tea bags to last a siege. We’d set off from Cheshire full of beans, windows down, singing along to some dodgy 90s playlist. But about halfway there, just past Bala, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided to play chicken with us on a narrow bend. I slammed the brakes, heart in my mouth, and we skidded to a halt inches from its woolly backside. The dog went mental in the boot, the kids howled with laughter, and I sat there chuckling at my own white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel. “Welcome to Wales,” I muttered, as the sheep sauntered off like it owned the road. Typical.

By the time we trundled into Dolgellau, the anticipation was bubbling over. I’d been dreaming of this getaway for weeks – no emails, no deadlines, just us lot switching off in the heart of Eryri National Park. Pulling up to the property, my first impressions were spot on: this welcoming detached three-storey house looked like it was waiting to hug you hello. Pet-friendly (hurrah for the spaniel), with off-road parking for five cars – we bagged the prime spot – and that private hot tub peeking coyly from the garden. Inside, it was all deep wooden features and slate floors, drawing you into this proper intimate haven. The living/dining room screamed cosiness, Smart TV ready for a lazy film binge, and the kitchen/diner had everything: electric oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, and a big table for eight. Perfect for our rabble.

But honestly, the real joy? Doing sod all. We’d planned grand hikes up Cadair Idris or wanders to Torrent Walk, but life had other ideas – or rather, we did. The first day, after unpacking, we just flopped. I cracked open my battered copy of a Philip Pullman novel in the garden, feet up on a lounger, while the sun filtered through the trees. The other half bubbled away in the hot tub, steam rising like a cheeky dragon’s breath, and the kids disappeared into the games room for a marathon of ping-pong and pool. Laughter echoed out, mixed with the distant bleat of sheep – proper rural symphony.

Next morning, same vibe. Brewed a pot of tea, rustled up bacon butties in the kitchen (that hob was a dream), then back to the garden. I spent hours there, lost in my book, watching clouds scud over the hills. The dog chased shadows, the hot tub called us back for afternoon dips – pure bliss, that warm water easing out the drive’s tensions. Evenings blurred into snuggling on the sofa with a film, plates of pasta from the oven, no rush to clear up. One night, staring at the stars from the garden – clearer than city skies ever get – I had a proper moment. Work’s been manic lately, hasn’t it? Chasing promotions, ticking boxes. Here, time stretched lazy as a cat in sunshine. Why do we hurry so? This was the reset I didn’t know I needed.

By the end of the week, we’d barely strayed beyond a gentle stroll to the local shop for milk and Welsh cakes. No epic adventures, just cottage days of reading, bubbling, and breathing deep. Snowdonia’s magic isn’t always in the mountains – sometimes it’s in the slowing down. We left fatter in the soul, already plotting a return.
