About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive to our little getaway in Snowdonia – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the main road turned into a comedy of errors thanks to my hopeless sense of direction. Satnav? More like sat-nag, barking orders while I missed the turning for Dolgellau and ended up looping back through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel. To top it off, we hit a sudden downpour – classic Welsh weather – and my windscreen wipers decided to play up, smearing rain across the glass like a bad abstract painting. By the time we spotted the sign for our shepherd hut, halfway between Dolgellau and Barmouth, I was frazzled, swearing under my breath (quietly, mind), and promising the missus I’d never trust Google Maps again.

But oh, the anticipation had been building all week. I’d been daydreaming about ditching the daily grind for some proper peace in the countryside, just us two, no kids, no emails, no nothing. Pulling up, though, the first impressions hit like a warm hug. There it was, this cosy shepherd hut perched with cracking views over a pond and rolling hills – the kind of spot that makes you exhale and think, “Yeah, we’ve made it.” We clambered up the steps, bags in tow, still damp from the rain, and stepped inside to a proper gem. It’s kitted out just right for a self-catering romantic do: snug sofa begging you to flop down, electric oven and hob gleaming and ready for action. We dumped our stuff and immediately cracked open a bottle of wine I’d stashed in the cool bag – survival rations from the car chaos.

Sinking into that sofa felt like heaven after the road farce. The place is intimate, perfect for couples – no sprawling rooms, just enough space to feel wrapped up in each other and the views. Outside, the private hot tub winked at us through the window, steam rising despite the drizzle, with the pond mirroring the moody sky. I couldn’t resist a cheeky peek while the kettle boiled for a cuppa. First impressions? Spot on. It’s got that effortless charm, like it’s been waiting just for us.

We didn’t venture far that first evening – why would you, with all this on your doorstep? A quick amble around the pond revealed ducks paddling about, and the countryside stretched out like a painting, all misty hills and sheep-dotted fields. Dinner was simple: I rustled up pasta on the hob while she fiddled with the fairy lights (yes, there are some – pure magic). Laughing about my driving disasters over our plates, I had one of those gentle moments of reflection. You know, the kind where you realise how daft it is to stress over satnav when places like this remind you life’s too short not to switch off? We topped it off with the hot tub under the stars – rain cleared just in time – bubbling away as we watched the sunset paint the hills pink. Pure bliss.

If you’re after a romantic escape without the faff, this is it. Snowdonia’s magic starts right here, mishaps and all. We’re already plotting a return – sans the scenic route next time.
