About Snowdonia
We'd been dreaming of a proper getaway to Snowdonia for ages, just me, my wife Sarah, and our cheeky spaniel, Monty. The drive from Cheshire was meant to be a breeze, but typical us – about halfway there, we hit a massive downpour and took a wrong turn down some narrow lane that turned into a muddy quagmire. Monty thought it was a lark, sticking his nose out the window, while Sarah gripped the dashboard muttering about sat-navs being possessed. Heart in my mouth, I reversed us out without a scrape, and soon enough we were back on track, anticipation building as the rugged Welsh hills came into view.

Pulling up to this charming little cottage overlooking Llandanwg beach in Llanaber felt like unwrapping a present. Off-road parking for three cars meant no faffing about with street spaces, and Monty gave it the excited tail-wag seal of approval as we unloaded. First impressions? Blown away. The unique brick exterior blends that cosy traditional vibe with a fresh, modern twist – proper inviting. Stepping inside, the open-plan kitchen/dining area hit us like a warm hug, with three patio doors spilling out to a garden that frames the sea and rolling fields perfectly. You could whip up breakfast gazing at the waves crashing below. The kitchen's got these smart blue fittings, making it dead easy to rustle up a fry-up or a pasta bake without feeling cramped.

We settled in quick, cracking open a bottle of wine as the sun dipped over the coast. Mornings kicked off with Monty scampering across the beach just down the steps – Llandanwg's a hidden gem, all soft sands and dunes, perfect for a gentle stroll without the crowds. We'd pack a thermos and wander hand-in-hand, dodging jellyfish washed up by the tide, laughing about how Monty always finds the one puddle to roll in. Afternoons were for lazy potterings: a short hop to Harlech Castle for a mooch around its ancient walls, feeling like we'd stepped into a history book, or just flopping in the garden with books and brews, watching sheep dot the fields.

One evening, trying to play the domestic gods, Sarah and I attempted a "gourmet" Welsh rarebit in that brilliant kitchen. Chaos ensued – cheese everywhere, Monty hoovering up the spills like a furry Roomba. We ended up eating it straight from the pan on the patio, toasting to simple pleasures amid the sea breeze. It was one of those moments that made me pause: life's mad rush back home fades here, doesn't it? Just us, a bit of cottage mayhem, and nature doing its thing.

Venturing into Eryri National Park was effortless from here – a gentle drive to nearby trails like the Rhinog paths for a breezy hike, puffing up hills with epic sea views, then back for tea and telly. No grand plans, just that relaxed family-couple rhythm: beachcombing for shells, fish and chips from the local in Llanbedr, evening chats about nothing much. Snowdonia's magic snuck up on us – raw, peaceful, alive. Leaving felt bittersweet; we've already pencilled in a return. If you're after unpretentious bliss, this is your spot.
