About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot in Snowdonia, Wales – a proper white-knuckle start to what turned out to be a cracking getaway. We’d piled into the car from Manchester, kids in the back squabbling over crisps, when halfway through the drizzle turned biblical. The sat-nav lost its marbles on those twisty Gwynedd lanes, sending us on a detour that had us splashing through a ford deeper than expected. Cue one very soggy boot and me swearing off tech for life – or at least until the next trip. But as we crested the hill just minutes from Barmouth, hearts lifted: there it was, this grand Victorian house perched with killer sea views, all high ceilings and bay windows screaming old-school charm. First impressions? Blown away. Spacious, stylish, and begging for us to kick off our shoes.

We were a big family mob – seven of us – and the place was spot-on: light sitting room for lounging with the Smart TV, a kitchen that tempted even my dodgy cooking skills with local grub, and a dining room perfect for lingering over fish and chips from Barmouth. That enclosed courtyard with its hot tub? Heaven in the sun. Upstairs, the snug and games room kept the late nights going with cards and daft stories till the stars popped out.

But let’s be honest, we didn’t come for lounging – Snowdonia’s calling for hikes, innit? Day one, blue skies had us buzzing with arrival anticipation. We headed straight for Barmouth’s Blue Flag beach, then along the coastal path towards the Mawddach Estuary. Flat at first, easy strolling with seals bobbing about and gulls overhead – proper idyllic. Pushed on to a gentle clifftop trail, puffing up for those panoramic views over the bay. Kids raced ahead, I lagged behind grinning like an idiot, feeling that rare buzz of everything slotting right.

Come day two, classic British weather flipped the script. Grey clouds rolled in overnight, and by breakfast it was lashing it down. No way were we letting that scupper plans – we rugged up and tackled the shorter Panorama Walk above Barmouth. Muddy underfoot, wind whipping our hoods, but the payoff? Misty views across to Diffwys that felt like we’d nicked a piece of the wild. Laughed our heads off slipping on wet rocks, me channeling my inner Bear Grylls (minus the beard). Back at the house, hot tub was a godsend – steaming away the chill while we plotted tomorrow.

By mid-week, sun teased us out for a jaunt to nearby Fairbourne beach, then inland along estuary trails spotting herons and maybe an otter if we were lucky. Weather held till it didn’t – sudden downpour had us sheltering under a tree, brewing tea from the flask and pondering life’s little soakings. That’s when I had a quiet moment: staring at the rain-lashed sea from the bay window, mug in hand, realising these mishaps – the detour, the gales – make the good bits shine brighter. No Instagram perfection, just real family chaos turning into memories.

Last day, one final yomp up to the headland paths around Barmouth, weather playing nice with watery sun. Legs ached, but hearts full. If you’re after a Snowdonia stay blending epic walks (rain or shine) with a cosy base for wet-weather huddles, this corner near Barmouth’s your spot. We’re already plotting a return – drier socks permitting.
