About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive to Blaenau Ffestiniog last autumn – the leaves were turning that perfect coppery gold, carpeting the roads like nature’s confetti. Me, my partner, and our scruffy terrier, Monty, piled into the car from Cheshire, buzzing with that pre-holiday excitement. But about halfway, disaster struck: a puncture on the A470, right as the sun dipped low and painted the hills in that moody Welsh twilight. We were stranded for an hour, me faffing with the spare tyre while Monty eyed me like I’d ruined his day. Still, it gave us time to munch on crisps and laugh about how holidays never start smoothly.

By the time we rolled into the village, dusk was settling, and the air had that crisp bite that screams autumn in Snowdonia. Spotting our little single-storey cottage tucked away from the bustle, my heart lifted – it looked like a proper welcoming hug of a place, all cosy and unpretentious. We’d booked it for its private hot tub and that fire pit out back, perfect for two and a dog who thinks he’s part of the furniture. First impressions? Spot on. Stepping inside to the open-plan living space, with its double bedroom just off it, felt like slipping into a warm woolly jumper after a chilly hike.

Autumn shaped every minute of our stay, turning the ordinary into magic. Mornings started with mist rolling off the nearby hills – we’d wrap up in layers and wander the short stroll to the village for fresh bread and coffee from the Spar, the air heavy with the scent of damp earth and fallen leaves. One day, we tackled Llechwedd Slate Caverns, just up the road; the underground tours were eerie and brilliant, steam from our breaths mingling with the cool, echoing drips. Emerging into the golden afternoon light felt like stepping back into a painting, with russet bracken everywhere.

Evenings were the real treat, thanks to the season’s early dark. We’d light the fire pit, roast marshmallows till they were gooey disasters (Monty snaffled more than his share), then sink into the bubbling hot tub under a sky thick with stars. No light pollution here – just the Milky Way stretching over the uplands, and that fresh, piney chill nipping at our toes. It was pure bliss, especially after a gentle yomp around the local paths, crunching through leaves with Monty bounding ahead like a furry hoover for conkers.

Looking back, that puncture was a blessing in disguise – it made us slow down and savour the autumn vibes even more. In summer, this spot might buzz with midges and crowds, but October gifted us quiet drama: frosty mornings, vibrant foliage framing the rugged hills, and that invigorating nip urging you indoors for a snuggle. We left feeling utterly recharged, already plotting a return when the leaves turn next year. If you’re after a simple escape with your other half and a pet, this corner of Snowdonia in autumn is unbeatable – just pack a spare tyre.
