About Snowdonia
I finally made it to Capel Curig after a bit of a faff on the A5 – took a wrong turn near Betws-y-Coed and ended up circling a sheep jam for half an hour. Typical me, always more excited about the destination than the sat nav. But as I pulled up to this stunning converted church holiday home, right across from the village store, my heart did a little flip. I'd been buzzing about it all week, imagining cosy evenings after days out, and the first glimpse didn't disappoint – those Snowdonia peaks framing the place like a postcard, with Moel Siabod looming invitingly close.

Stepping inside with my mates and family (we were a hefty group of 14, perfect for the spacious setup), it felt like we'd hit the jackpot. Proper comfortable, with everything you need for self-catering without skimping on style. We dumped the bags and beelined for the kitchen – massive, gleaming, begging for a proper feast. First mission: stock up. The shop over the road is a gem, crammed with local bits like Welsh cheeses, fresh bread, and those plump sausages that scream proper breakfast. I grabbed a load of lamb chops, some leeks the size of my arm, and a slab of bara brith for elevenses. Blimey, it was like wandering into a mini farmers' market.

That first night, we attempted a Welsh feast – cawl bubbling away, my other half heroically chopping veg while I manned the stove. Let's just say my "rustic" stew had a bit too much enthusiasm with the salt; tasted like the Irish Sea in a bowl. We all had a good chuckle over it, passing round the bread to mop up. Thank goodness for the Bryn Tyrch Inn just a stroll away – we nipped over for pints and their legendary fish and chips, crispy batter that crunched just right, with mushy peas on the side. Proper pub grub, chatty locals, and that warm glow from the fire. Felt like we'd been coming here for years.

Next day, we hiked a gentle loop around Moel Siabod (didn't fancy the full slog), stomachs rumbling by noon. Back at the house, lunch was a triumph: shop-bought crab from the deli counter, piled into fresh rolls with butter and a squeeze of lemon. Afternoon tea? Scones from the store, clotted cream, and strawberry jam – I even tried baking flapjacks, which mercifully didn't set off the smoke alarm. Dinner was a group effort: roast chicken with all the trimmings, using herbs we'd spotted growing nearby. Paired with a cheeky bottle of red, it was spot on.

Evenings were pub-hopping heaven. The Tyn-y-Coed Inn round the corner does the best homemade pies – steak and ale that melts in your mouth, followed by sticky toffee pudding so good I had seconds and didn't care. We wandered between the two inns, sampling local ales like Conway Welsh Pride, swapping stories with hikers. One night, I reflected over a pint how these simple meals – half-cooked disasters and all – made the trip. In the rush of life back home, we rarely cook together like that, laughing at my kitchen blunders. It's the food that sticks with you here, tying everything together.

If you're after a Snowdonia base where you can eat like kings without straying far, this spot's unbeatable. Pubs on tap, a cracking shop, and a kitchen that invites culinary chaos. Can't wait to go back.
