About The Old Stable.
Conway, a World Heritage Site, is famed worldwide for its historical and architectural heritage, yet its bustling town centre thrives with specialist shops, eateries, and hotels. Enjoy traditional festivals like the Gwledd Conway Feast, Honey Fair and Seed Fair, plus music, galleries and attractions. Conway Castle, built for Edward I (1283-1287), exemplifies medieval military architecture with its unique elongated shape, barbicans, towers and bow-shaped hall on a rocky outcrop. It's the perfect base for Snowdonia National Park, sandy beaches, Llechwedd Slate Caverns (Europe's longest zip line) and Surf Snowdonia, just six miles away. Nearby attractions.
About Snowdonia
Finally rolling up, heart racing a bit from the anticipation of ditching city life, we were chuffed to bits. It was one of those cosy self-catering cottages, proper homely with a welcoming vibe, and just 2.5 miles from Conway – close enough for a jaunt but far enough to feel tucked away. First impressions? Magic. The views over the hills were straight out of a postcard, and as we unpacked, I could already picture lazy mornings with tea in hand, watching the mist lift. What turned this trip into pure gold, though, wasn’t the usual tourist traps. No, it was the hidden gems we stumbled on by accident, thanks to our knack for wandering off the beaten track. First day, we parked up near the cottage and followed a faint footpath that wasn’t on any map app – turned out to be a secret little valley with a babbling brook and wild ponies grazing like they owned the place. We picnicked there, the kids splashing about, and I swear it felt like we’d gatecrashed Narnia. No crowds, just us and the sheep eyeing us suspiciously. Next mishap came when I misread a signpost (my directional skills are legendary for all the wrong reasons) and we veered off towards Sychnant Pass. What a find! This winding old drovers’ route, barely a whisper on the tourist radar, gave us panoramic views down to Conway Bay without another soul in sight. We parked the car, scrambled up a bit, and watched paragliders dot the sky like colourful birds. The wind whipped our cheeks pink, and we laughed till our sides hurt when a gust nearly bowled my other half over. One evening, aiming for a quick walk, we got properly lost in the woods behind Bodafon Hall – or so we thought. Pushed on by curiosity, we emerged at this tucked-away waterfall, not much bigger than a garden hose on steroids, but with a pool perfect for skimming stones. The kids declared it their “pirate lagoon,” and we stayed till dusk, toasting marshmallows on a cheeky little fire. Pure, unscripted joy. Looking back, I reckon that’s the real lesson from our Snowdonia jaunt: sometimes the best bits hide down the wrong turn. I’m a planner by nature, always with the itinerary, but letting go and embracing the lost moments made it unforgettable. If you’re heading this way, ditch the guidebook, trust your nose (or your dodgy sat-nav), and let the hills spill their secrets. We’re already plotting a return – next time, I’m packing extra wellies. |
