About Snowdonia
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot in Harlech – it was one of those classic Welsh trips where the sat-nav decides to have a midlife crisis. We’d piled into the car from Manchester with the kids, the dog, and enough snacks to feed a small army, buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation. Snowdonia’s peaks loomed on the horizon, all misty and majestic, and I was picturing us kicking back with epic views. But no, about 20 minutes from Harlech, the heavens opened, turning the A470 into a proper river. Then, disaster: the windscreen wipers packed up just as a sheep decided to photobomb the road. Cue me swearing under my breath (well, quietly, with kids in the back), pulling over in the pouring rain to fiddle with fuses while the family chorused “Are we there yet?” from the steamed-up windows. Classic dad fail – I’m usually the organised one, but there I was, soaked to the skin, looking like a drowned rat.

By the time we finally rolled up, frazzled and late, the chaos felt like it’d bonded us closer. The property hit us like a warm hug straight away – this gorgeous lodge perched with these insane sea views stretching over the golf course towards the Llyn Peninsula. We tumbled in, dripping puddles everywhere, and honestly, the first impressions were spot on. It’s got that lovely period charm inside, all cosy and inviting, but with every modern gadget you could want. Perfect for us lot, including our daft Labrador who immediately claimed the rug as his throne.

We dumped the bags and made a beeline for the snug lounge – feet up, woodburner crackling away (someone had thoughtfully stocked it), and that massive telly begging for a bit of rubbish TV. The open-plan bit next door felt made for us: sprawling out on the sofas, nattering about the drive while I rustled up supper in the cracking kitchen. That range cooker? A dream – big enough to cook a feast without elbowing anyone, and the integrated fridge and dishwasher meant no washing-up wars. Tucked-away utility room was a godsend too, especially with muddy paws and wellies to sort.

But the real star? That enclosed terrace. We braved a peek despite the drizzle, and blimey, the hot tub was calling our names. Views for days – you could practically see forever across the coast. We didn’t linger long that first evening (too knackered), but sinking into it later with a brew, watching the sun dip behind the hills, was pure magic. The kids were in heaven, racing around the space like it was their personal playground, and even the dog looked chuffed, tail wagging at the window.

Looking back, that messy arrival was the perfect icebreaker. It made the snugness of the place feel even better – a reminder that holidays aren’t about flawless plans, but those daft moments that turn into stories. We spent the next days pottering around Harlech Castle (just a short stroll away, all moody and historic), splashing on the beach, and hiking gentle trails with Snowdonia’s mountains as backdrop. No fancy itineraries, just proper unwinding. If you’re after a family bolt-hole or mates’ getaway that ticks every box, this is it. Can’t wait to go back – minus the wiper drama, hopefully.
