laid back luxury, with a hot tub in the quiet hills beyond the towns of brecon and sennybridge. there are great days out to be had in the surrounding brecon beacons, from walking the highest south wales peak, pen y fan, to enjoying yummy meals in one of the many country pubs in the area, that's if you can tear yourself away from the bubbly tub. the area is very good for cycling with routes for both mountain bikes and road cyclists, with bike hire available in brecon and hay on wye. brecon has a small independent cinema too. sennybridge is the closest town, best for the basics, head to brecon for a proper welsh town, complete with cathedral, regimental museum, cinema and mountaineering shops. hay on wye is a favourite, with heaps of independent stores and cafes. explore the popular dan yr ogof caves nearby, or big pit for a cultural adventure, both of which are a great family day out. leisure facilities: hot tub. outdoor play barn: with table tennis and pool table. shared play facilities: children’s play frame with slide.

About South Wales
I finally made it to that tucked-away holiday cottage in the quiet hills beyond Brecon and Sennybridge after a bit of a faff on the journey down. I'd been buzzing with anticipation all morning—visions of rolling Welsh hills and proper downtime dancing in my head—but then the sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis just past the M4, sending me on a detour through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel. A sheep stared me down like it owned the road, and I nearly ended up in a ditch laughing at the absurdity. Still, by early afternoon, I pulled up to this laid-back luxury spot, and blimey, the first impressions were spot on: cosy vibes, stunning views over the hills, and that hot tub winking at me from the garden like an old mate saying, "Come on then, relax."

From the off, I knew this was the place to do bugger all—and I mean that in the best way. No grand plans, just sinking into the rhythm of lazy cottage days. The garden's a proper suntrap, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, with those shared kids' play bits in the distance (handy if you're with little ones, though mine were off with grandparents this time). I claimed a lounger with a cuppa and my latest paperback, letting the world slow to a crawl. Who needs an alarm when the birds are your gentle nudge at dawn?

Tearing myself away for a mooch? Only when the mood struck. Sennybridge is just down the road for basics—a pint of milk and a cheeky pasty—but Brecon's the real draw, a proper Welsh town with its cathedral and that tiny independent cinema showing films I'd missed. We caught a matinee one drizzly afternoon, munching popcorn like it was 1995. Hay on Wye's a short hop too, all those quirky bookshops and cafes begging for a browse; I snagged a dog-eared thriller and felt instantly smug.

But honestly, the joy was in the nothing. Evenings in the hot tub, bubbles fizzing away the week's stresses, watching the sun dip behind the Beacons. The outdoor play barn became our lazy hangout—me pottering at table tennis while the other half nailed a few pool shots, giggling over missed cues. No rush to conquer Pen y Fan or cycle the trails (though bike hire's easy in Brecon if you're that way inclined). Dan yr Ogof caves tempted for a family outing another time, or Big Pit for a bit of underground history, but not this trip. This was about switching off.

Sitting there one evening, steam rising, book forgotten on the side, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Life back home's a whirlwind—deadlines, emails, the lot—and I'd forgotten how good it feels to just... be. No guilt, no FOMO. The hills whispered permission to slow down, and I lapped it up. If you're after that rare holiday where doing very little feels like the main event, this corner of South Wales is pure magic. Can't wait to go back and do even less.
