About South Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to South Wales last month – me behind the wheel, sat-nav chirping away, and a boot full of wellies and waterproofs just in case. We’d been dreaming of this getaway for ages, a proper escape to a luxury beach house right on the Glamorgan Heritage Coastal Path. But about 20 miles out, disaster struck: a massive pothole sent us veering into the verge with a nasty thunk. Flat tyre, naturally. Stood there in the drizzle, laughing at our luck while the AA bloke sorted it, I couldn’t help thinking, ‘Typical British holiday start – chaos before the calm.’

By the time we rolled up, the sun was peeking through, and blimey, what a first impression. This bespoke eco-friendly gem perched on the cliffs, all sleek lines and sea views, screaming luxury without the pretension. We tumbled out, bags in hand, hearts racing with that buzz of arrival – you know, that moment when you realise you’ve nailed the perfect spot for unwinding with mates or family.

First day, weather gods smiling, we laced up and hit the Coastal Path. It’s pure magic along there – sandy beaches stretching out, rock pools teeming with crabs for the kids to poke at, and those historic ruins dotting the landscape like forgotten treasures. We wandered for hours, past the estuary where seals bobbed about (or were they just logs? Who knows), stopping for pebble skimming contests that had us in stitches. Pony trekking along the dunes was next – a short stroll away, and the horses plodding through the sand felt like stepping into a Enid Blyton book. Laughter echoing, sea breeze whipping our faces – proper joy.

But oh, the British weather, eh? Next morning, it was lashing down, wind howling like a banshee. Our grand plan for a full coastal hike to the golf course evaporated faster than a puddle in sunshine. Instead, we rugged up and embraced the squall. Layers of Gore-Tex on, we trudged the path anyway, turning it into a comedy of errors: me slipping arse-over-tit on a muddy bit (gently, mind – no heroics), everyone soaked but giggling. Spotted surfers braving the waves near the beach, mad lot, and fishermen huddled by their rods, looking wiser than us. We detoured to rock pools, huddling under hoods to hunt for blennies, then dashed back for hot mugs of tea. That rain turned a potential washout into one of our best memories – gritty, real, and utterly Welsh.

Evenings, we’d collapse into the house, dripping but chuffed, firing up the stove while planning the morrow. One drizzly hike took us estuary-side, wildlife everywhere – herons stalking the shallows, oystercatchers piping away. Cleared our heads, you know? Made me reflect a bit, mid-tramp: life’s too short for fair-weather plans. These changeable days, forcing you to adapt, that’s where the good stuff hides. Whether sun-baked strolls or rain-lashed yomps, the Coastal Path delivers. Shops and eateries a stone’s throw away kept us fuelled – fish and chips from the local, grabbed en route.

We left fitter, closer, and already plotting a return. South Wales coast, you legend – rain or shine, you’ve got the lot.
