About South Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to South Wales last autumn – the leaves were turning that gorgeous coppery gold, carpeting the roads like nature’s own welcome mat. Me, the wife, our two lads in their twenties, and my mum and dad all piled into the car from the Midlands, buzzing with that pre-holiday excitement. But about halfway there, disaster struck: a rogue pheasant decided to play chicken with our windscreen. Feathers everywhere, heart in my mouth, and a quick pit stop at a services to calm the nerves. “Well,” I laughed to the family, “at least it wasn’t a full-on flock – we’d have ended up as the main course!”

By the time we rolled into the charming village of Cwmtwrch-Uchaf, the afternoon sun was dipping low, casting this magical, amber glow over everything. We were dead chuffed with our first impressions of the place – this stunning Visit Wales 5-star rated house, perfect for our multi-generational crew, tucked away in a spot that felt like a proper hidden gem. Spacious, cosy, and with that just-right autumnal vibe, it screamed “relax and recharge.” The anticipation built as we unloaded – imagining cosy evenings in after days out in the crisp air.

Autumn really made this holiday, you know? The Brecon Beacons National Park, just four miles away, was an absolute dream in that season. We headed out the next morning, the air sharp and invigorating, crunching through fallen leaves on gentle walking trails. The landscapes were breathtaking – misty valleys rolling out like a painting, with bracken turning rusty red and the odd splash of heather still clinging on. Us older lot stuck to the easier paths, while the boys powered ahead, pretending they were Bear Grylls. Lunch was a picnic of cheese pasties and flask tea, huddled against a drystone wall, watching the clouds scud across the hills. Pure bliss, that seasonal shift making every breath feel alive.

One highlight was a family stomp to a nearby spot in the Beacons – nothing too strenuous, but the autumn colours popping against the grey skies had us all grinning like kids. Back at the house, we’d light the fire (bless the hosts for stocking it up), sip hot chocolate laced with marshmallows, and play board games till late. Mum reflected quietly one evening, staring into the flames: “This time of year reminds me how fleeting it all is – makes you appreciate these moments with everyone together.” Got me thinking, too – in our hectic lives, when do we get this? Gentle nudge to the soul, that was.

Even the little village walks felt enchanted under those autumn skies, with the scent of damp earth and woodsmoke in the air. No need to venture far; the property’s location nailed it for us. We wrapped up with a lazy morning watching deer graze in the fields nearby, the frost-kissed grass sparkling. Driving home, windows down despite the chill, we were already plotting a return – autumn in South Wales has well and truly stolen our hearts. If you’re after a getaway that lets the season do the heavy lifting, this is your spot.
