About South Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to that tucked-away spot in South Wales – me behind the wheel, sat-nav chirping away like it owned the road, and the whole family crammed in with snacks and squabbles. We’d just hit the twisty lanes near Llanfihangel Tal-y-llyn when disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided to photobomb our journey, forcing me into an emergency brake that sent crisps flying everywhere. Cue laughter, a quick photo of the fluffy culprit, and a reminder that this is Wales, where the livestock has right of way. Still, the anticipation built as we wound closer – visions of kicking back in some proper rural idyll, far from the daily grind.

Pulling up to the place was pure magic, though. This impressive six-bedroom former farmhouse retreat slept all 12 of us with room to spare, perfect for our big extended family bash. From the off, it felt like stepping into a hug – lush gardens stretching out, hot tub bubbling invitingly, and that whiff of fresh country air. We dumped the bags and just drank it in, grinning like kids on Christmas morning.

But honestly, the real joy? Doing sod all. After years of rushing about, this holiday was my gentle nudge to slow right down. Mornings melted into lazy lounging in the garden, sprawled on loungers with a cuppa, watching clouds drift over the Bannau Brycheiniog hills just a mile and a half away. No alarms, no schedules – just the rustle of leaves and the odd bird trilling. I’d crack open a book I’d been meaning to read for ages, losing hours to page-turners while the others did their thing. The kids vanished into the games room for ping-pong marathons, emerging red-faced and triumphant, but I stayed put, savouring the quiet.

Afternoons were hot tub heaven. Sinking into those warm bubbles, book in one hand, cold drink in the other, with views of nothing but green rolling hills – bliss. The sauna called for a sneaky steam now and then, melting away any lingering tension, and evenings? Cinema room nirvana. We’d pile in with popcorn for feel-good films, but half the time I’d nod off, lulled by the surround sound and sheer contentment. Dinner was a communal faff in the massive kitchen – someone rustling up pasties or a curry, eaten al fresco as the sun dipped low.

One evening, garden-gazing with a glass of wine, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Life’s so frantic back home – work, school runs, endless to-do lists. Here, time stretched out like the views. I caught myself thinking, “Why don’t I make space for this more often?” It wasn’t about grand adventures (though a short stroll to Llangors Lake, just over two miles off, tempted us once for a paddle). No, it was the luxury of lingering – reading that extra chapter, napping without guilt, chatting idly till dusk.

We left fatter in the soul, lighter in the step. If you’re after a spot to celebrate with loved ones and properly unwind, this Mid Wales gem is it. Pure, unhurried joy.
