About South Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to South Wales – or rather, the comedy of errors that got me there. We’d set off from Cardiff early, buzzing with that holiday anticipation, windows down, radio blaring some cracking indie tunes. But halfway through, just past Merthyr, the satnav decided to throw a wobbly and directed us down a single-track lane that was more puddle than path. Cue me white-knuckling the wheel while my other half laughed and snapped pics of the sheep giving us the side-eye. Twenty minutes of reversing etiquette later, we emerged, a bit windswept but giggling, right into the Llanfihangel Nant Bran valley. First impressions? Magic. The air hit you like a fresh brew – crisp, alive with birdsong – and there it was, this beautifully converted 17th-century granary turned cosy cottage, plonked on a working family farm. Proper inviting, like it was waiting just for us.

Stepping inside felt like sinking into a warm hug. It’s the sort of place made for couples or small families, with everything you need and nothing you don’t. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of local cider on the spot. The real joy, though? Doing sod all. Absolutely nothing. After months of rushing about, this was our reset button.

Mornings kicked off lazy as you like. I’d potter out to the garden – a wildish patch of grass and flowers with views that stretched forever over the valley. The resident sheep and ponies mooched about, close enough to chat to (or bribe with the odd carrot), and red kites wheeled overhead like feathered aerobatics. Bliss. We’d snag breakfast on a rickety table out there – toast, marmalade, endless tea – watching mist lift off the hills. No plans, no clocks. Just us, the breeze, and the odd pony snort for entertainment.

Afternoons blurred into garden lounging heaven. I’d flop in a chair with a dog-eared paperback – some trashy thriller that’d been gathering dust on the shelf – while the sun filtered through the hedges. My partner sketched or dozed; we barely spoke beyond “Fancy a cuppa?” The cottage had this knack of slowing time right down. You could hear yourself think, or not think, which was even better. One day, I wandered a few steps for a gentle rural stroll – nothing strenuous, just enough to stretch the legs amid buttercup fields and babbling streams – then straight back to base for more reading. The valley’s a nature lover’s dream, all endless walks from the door, but honestly, we barely bothered. Why rush when paradise is your doorstep?

Evenings were peak chill. Cosy up with supper from the farm shop down the lane – fresh eggs, cheese that tasted of actual grass – and a board game that dissolved into chit-chat. Stargazing from the garden felt otherworldly; no light pollution, just a sky full of wonders.

Looking back, I had a proper moment of self-reflection sprawled there one sunset, book forgotten. Life’s mad whirl had me knackered, always chasing the next thing. This cottage? It whispered, “Stop. Breathe. Be.” We left fatter in the soul, lighter in the mind. If you fancy switching off proper, hunt down a spot like this in the Brecons. Pure joy in the art of bugger all.
