About South Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to South Wales last month – me, crammed into the car with my other half and the dog, sat-nav confidently directing us off the M4 towards this cracking little spot in the Vale of Glamorgan. We’d been buzzing with anticipation, picturing lazy evenings in a pub and proper countryside walks, but about 20 minutes from Cardiff, disaster struck: a sudden downpour turned the motorway into a skating rink, and I aquaplaned right into a puddle the size of a small lake. Heart in my mouth, we pulled over, laughing nervously as the rain hammered the windscreen. “Typical British holiday start,” I muttered, but it only ramped up the excitement for what lay ahead.

Pulling up to the 5-star apartment, I was chuffed to bits. It’s the perfect setup – all the charm of a traditional countryside village with a couple of cosy local pubs just down the lane, yet only 20 minutes from Cardiff city centre and a quick hop from the M4. Rural bliss meets city convenience, basically. First impressions? Spot on. The place felt like a proper home from home, sleek and comfy, with everything you need after a soggy drive. We dumped the bags, cracked open a cuppa, and eyed up the trails nearby, dreaming of coastal paths and gentle hikes.

Next morning, the weather gods smiled: blue skies over the South Wales coastline, just a few miles away. We laced up our boots for a cracking walk along the clifftops near St Donat’s – think dramatic waves crashing below, gulls wheeling overhead, and that fresh sea air that makes you feel alive. The dog went mental, chasing shadows, while we puffed along, stopping for snaps at Porthkerry Viaduct. Pure magic, and only a short drive from the apartment. Lunch in one of the village pubs – pie and a pint – topped it off perfectly.

But oh, the British weather, eh? Day two, we’d planned a longer ramble through the woods around Fonmon Castle, maybe linking up to the coastal path towards Barry. Grey clouds rolled in as we set off, turning into a proper deluge halfway round. Soaked to the skin, we ducked under trees, giggling like kids as thunder rumbled. “This is why we pack waterproofs,” I said, wringing out my socks. Plan B kicked in: a muddy tromp back to the car, then a detour to the local golf courses at Vale of Glamorgan or Cottrell Park for a squelchy stroll around the edges – fairways gleaming wet, but the views over the countryside were stunning. It forced us to slow down, chat about nothing and everything, and appreciate the wild beauty even in the wet.

By the third day, the sun peeked out again, luring us back out for a victory lap: a breezy hike from the village lanes towards the coast, dodging puddles and spotting wildlife. Reflecting on it now, those weather flips were the highlight – they turned a standard holiday into an adventure, reminding me I’m a fair-weather walker at heart but love the unpredictability. We wrapped up with a final pub evening, toasting the Vale’s hidden gems. If you fancy walks that mix coast, countryside, and a bit of chaos, this corner of South Wales is unbeatable. Can’t wait to go back.
