About South Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to Merthyr Tydfil last autumn – leaves turning that gorgeous coppery gold all along the A470, but of course, I managed to hit a bit of a snag just outside Brecon. Some cheeky roadworks popped up out of nowhere, turning what should’ve been a breezy hour-and-a-half from Cardiff into a two-hour crawl. I was stuck behind a lorry spewing diesel fumes, tapping the steering wheel and dreaming of a hot cuppa, but honestly, it only built the anticipation. By the time I crested that final hill into the valley, the late afternoon sun was dipping low, casting this magical glow over the hills, and I couldn’t wait to settle in.

Pulling up to the bright and inviting first-floor apartment right in the heart of Merthyr Tydfil felt like stumbling on a proper gem. It’s one of those homely spots perfect for a solo jaunt or a cosy couple’s getaway – even dog-friendly, though I was flying solo this time. The open layout hit me straight away: kitchen kitted out with oven, hob, fridge, the lot, flowing into a dining area and lounge where you could whip up a stew, scoff it down, then flop on the sofa with the TV or WiFi for some Netflix. First impressions? Spot on – it was warm, welcoming, and just what I needed after the traffic farce.

Autumn in the valleys shaped the whole trip in the best way. Mornings started crisp, with that fresh, earthy scent hanging in the air as I laced up my boots for a wander around Cyfarthfa Park, just a short stroll away. The leaves crunched underfoot, and the lake mirrored the fiery trees – proper picture-postcard stuff, though I did have a daft moment slipping on a wet path and nearly ending up in the duck pond. Laughed it off with a group of locals walking their spaniels; turns out, that seasonal chill makes everyone huddle and chat more.

Afternoons were for gentle hikes up to the nearby reservoirs – nothing too strenuous, mind, with the wind whipping through the russet bracken and distant sheep bleating like they owned the place. The cooler days meant fewer crowds, so I had trails like those around the Taff Trail almost to myself, watching mist roll in over the hills as the light faded early. Back at the flat, I’d fire up the kettle for a proper brew, maybe toast some crumpets, and cook a hearty casserole using the well-stocked kitchen. Those evenings unwinding with a film, rain pattering the window, felt like pure bliss – autumn’s shorter days turning the place into a snug haven.

One quiet moment by the window, sipping tea and gazing at the golden valley, had me reflecting: life’s too short not to chase these simple escapes. Amid the hustle back home, I’d forgotten how restorative a bit of seasonal magic could be – the way autumn wraps the South Wales valleys in that soft, nostalgic hush. No regrets about the drive, that’s for sure. If you’re after a base to soak up the area’s autumnal charm, this corner of Merthyr Tydfil delivers in spades. Can’t wait to go back next year.
