About South Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to Brecon – we’d packed the car to the gills with kids’ snacks, wellies, and enough board games to last a nuclear winter, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just outside Merthyr. It rerouted us down some winding back lane that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war, and there we were, bumping along with the little ones chanting “Are we there yet?” for the umpteenth time. I was half-convinced we’d end up in a field, but honestly, it just ramped up the excitement. By the time we crested that hill and spotted the town nestled in the valley, hearts were racing – this was going to be proper family time.

Pulling into our tucked-away apartment right in the heart of Brecon Town was a right treat. Spacious, comfy, with our own parking spot – no faffing about with street hunts. First impressions? Spot on. It felt like instant home-from-home, with everything we needed for a relaxed Welsh getaway. We dumped the bags and headed straight out for a riverside stroll from the doorstep, the kids splashing about while me and the missus soaked up that fresh Beacons air. Brecon’s got this unhurried charm – quiet central spot, yet buzzing just enough with independent cafes and takeaways that meant no one went hungry.

The first evening set the tone for cottage life chaos in the best way. We wandered to one of those cosy Welsh pubs nearby, grabbing fish and chips to bring back – the kids turned it into a picnic on the living room floor, complete with sauce disasters and giggles galore. Simple pleasures, eh? Next morning, we hit the canal towpath just 100 yards away, pushing the buggy along while the older two raced ahead on hired bikes from the bottom of the street. No grand plans, just pottering – spotting ducks, waving at narrowboats, and burning off breakfast energy.

Afternoons were for the town’s gentle vibe: popping into eateries for bara brith and a cuppa, or letting the little ones run wild on the cycle path towards the Taff Trail. Evenings? We caught a film at that cracking art deco cinema half a mile down the road – popcorn-fest with the family, pure magic after a day of fresh air. One highlight was trying our hand at trout fishing by the river – I hooked my own thumb more than anything, which had everyone in stitches. Light humour for a dad who fancies himself as Ray Mears but couldn’t catch a cold.

Reflecting on it now, sat back home with the washing piling up, I realise it’s these mishmashes of mayhem and mellow that make family breaks golden. No Instagram perfection, just us lot making memories amid Brecon’s easy charm – the perfect base for park jaunts without the hassle. If you’re after that relaxed South Wales escape, this is it. We’re already plotting a return.
