About South Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to Porthcawl – one of those classic Welsh holidays where everything starts with a bit of chaos. We’d piled into the car in Cardiff, kids in the back with snacks and iPads, me navigating via a dodgy phone signal. About halfway, disaster struck: a rogue seagull dive-bombed our windscreen, leaving a streak of what I can only describe as abstract art. We pulled over laughing (and slightly queasy), wiped it off with a pack of baby wipes, and carried on. By the time we trundled into the coastal town, the sun was dipping low over the sea, and I was buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation – you know, the kind where you imagine lazy days ahead with zero agenda.

Pulling up roadside was a doddle, and after lugging the bags up the stairs to this stylish first-floor apartment, we stepped inside and honestly, it was love at first sight. It’s got that contemporary vibe – think sleek lines and all the mod cons without any fuss. The kitchen’s a dream for knocking up simple suppers, and there’s a cosy spot by the electric fire perfect for evenings in. Pet-friendly too, which was ace for our little terrier, who immediately claimed a corner as his throne.

But here’s the thing: this trip wasn’t about ticking off bucket lists or hiking up hills. Nah, we were all about doing bugger all, and it was glorious. Mornings kicked off slow – brewing tea in that swish kitchen, then spilling out to the nearby beach just a stone’s throw away. We’d plonk down on the sand with books and flasks, watching dog walkers and the waves roll in. Porthcawl’s got that unhurried charm; the seafront’s dotted with ice cream vans and chip shops, but we barely strayed far. Afternoons blurred into lazy garden lounging – well, the shared outdoor bit at the back, where we’d sprawl on blankets with picnic leftovers, the dog chasing shadows while I buried my nose in a battered paperback. No schedules, no rushing – just the joy of slowing right down.

One day, I caught myself staring out the window at nothing much, a cuppa going cold, and had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home’s a whirlwind of deadlines and school runs – when did we last just *be*? It hit me that holidays like this aren’t about grand adventures; they’re about reclaiming that lost art of pottering. We’d wander to the local shops for fresh bread and fudge (Rest Bay’s just down the road for a gentle amble if the mood took us), then back for film nights by the fire, toasting with cheap Prosecco around the dining table. Evenings faded into board games and giggles, the sound of the sea humming outside.

By the end of the week, we’d done precisely nowt and everything all at once. Skin sandy, souls recharged – that’s the magic of a spot like this in South Wales. If you’re craving a break from the grind, grab your dog, your book, and come slow down here. You won’t regret it.
