About South Wales
I finally made it to this cracking little holiday cottage just two miles from Brecon, but not without a proper faff on the way down. I'd set off from Cardiff full of beans, sat-nav purring away, dreaming of rolling hills and a cosy spot to unwind after a hectic few months at work. But oh no, typical me – about halfway through the A470, I realised I'd left my phone charger in the kitchen drawer back home. No biggie, I thought, I'll pick one up in the next village. Except the next village was a blink-and-you-miss-it affair with a single petrol station that looked like it hadn't seen a customer since the '90s. Cue me rummaging through the glovebox for a dodgy old cable that barely worked, phone battery dipping into the red as I navigated those twisty Brecon roads.

By the time I turned off onto the quieter lanes, the anticipation was building – I'd booked this place for its promise of peace, right on the edge of the Beacons, perfect for a solo recharge. But then came the real comedy: the last mile involved a narrow track that my little hatchback wasn't thrilled about. I misjudged a pothole (they're practically speed bumps round here), and the car gave an alarming thunk, followed by a slow deflation of my left rear tyre. Heart in mouth, I pulled over, jumped out to inspect, and yep, a puncture. No signal on the phone, naturally, so there I was, mid-afternoon sun beating down, jacking up the car like a proper amateur mechanic in my holiday flip-flops. A passing farmer in a Land Rover took pity and gave me a tow to a nearby garage – bless him, proper hero stuff – and half an hour later, £40 lighter but tyre sorted, I was back on track.

Pulling up to the cottage at last, I was knackered but buzzing. It's one of those delightful, traditional Welsh properties – think low doorways that make you duck instinctively, a quaint garden bursting with wildflowers, and that instant hit of home-from-home charm. The first impressions? Spot on. Stepped inside to a lounge that screamed 'kick off your shoes and relax', with big windows framing the green hills rolling out like a postcard. Kitchen was kitted out nicely too – I rustled up a cuppa straight away, sinking into the sofa with a sigh of relief. The chaos of the journey melted away; this was exactly what I needed.

That evening, I wandered a short stroll to a nearby trailhead – nothing too strenuous, just enough to stretch the legs and watch the sun dip behind the Beacons. Spotted a few sheep eyeing me suspiciously, which cracked me up. Sat there with a thermos of tea, reflecting on how I could've planned better (note to self: pack spares next time), but honestly, these little mishaps make the best stories. Woke up next morning to birdsong and brekkie views that had me grinning like an idiot. If you're after a proper breather in South Wales, spots like this are gold dust – tyre dramas and all.
