We set off from Cardiff on a Friday afternoon with the usual optimism and an over-packed boot, only to take a wrong turning just outside Porthcawl and end up in a farmyard where a very unimpressed sheep stared us down. By the time we’d reversed out and found the right lane, the children were giggling and I was pretending the detour had been “scenic.” The Byre sits a short stroll from the dunes at Newton, and when we finally pulled up the gravel drive the low evening sun was catching the whitewashed walls and making the whole place look like it had been waiting for us.

The first thing that hit me was the quiet. Not total silence, just the gentle hush of waves somewhere beyond the marram grass and the odd gull calling overhead. We tumbled out, unlocked the door with the key safe code, and stepped into a bright open room where the sofa looked ready to swallow us whole. The children claimed the little twin room straight away, already arguing over who got the top bunk, while I made a beeline for the kettle and the view from the kitchen window—rolling fields on one side, a sliver of sea on the other.

After a quick cuppa we wandered down the sandy path to the beach with towels under our arms and shoes in our hands. The tide was out, leaving wide stretches of damp sand perfect for barefoot walking and the odd impromptu sandcastle. We didn’t stay long; just enough to feel the salt on our faces and watch a couple of surfers in wetsuits catching the last decent waves of the day. Back at the cottage the garden caught the last of the warmth, so we ate fish and chips straight from the paper on the picnic bench, flicking away the odd brave seagull.

Later, once the children were tucked up, I sat on the step with a glass of wine and let the day settle. The mishap on the way suddenly felt less like a mistake and more like the proper start to a holiday—nothing grand, just small, ordinary moments that somehow add up. The Byre didn’t need to impress us with anything flashy; it simply gave us space to slow down, kick off our shoes, and remember why we’d come.
