About South Wales
I finally made it to that posh holiday house in the Vale of Glamorgan after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Cardiff. I'd punched the postcode into the sat-nav, thinking it'd be a straight run, but no—somehow it sent me off down a narrow lane that turned into a muddy track. Picture me, white-knuckled on the wheel of my little hatchback, convinced I'd end up in a cow field. A quick reverse manoeuvre (with a few choice words under my breath) and I was back on track, heart racing but laughing at myself. Still, pulling up to this grand seven-bedroom beauty just 7.8 miles from Cardiff felt like arriving at my own secret castle. The place screamed luxury from the off—seasonal outdoor heated pool glinting in the sun, a bubbling hot tub begging for an evening dip, and off-road parking that saved my tyres from any more drama. Stepping inside across four levels of pure comfort, the ground floor's massive sitting room with its open fire and that dedicated cinema room had me grinning like a kid. First impressions? Spot on. This was going to be the perfect base for a family getaway.

Eager to explore but dead set on avoiding the tourist traps, I grabbed an OS map (old school, none of that Google Maps nonsense) and set off with the kids and mates, deliberately taking back roads. The Vale's got this knack for hiding gems if you just let yourself get lost a bit. First accidental find was a tucked-away coastal path near Rhoose Point, barely a couple of miles from the house. We'd missed a turning and stumbled onto this rugged cliff walk with views over the Bristol Channel that stopped us in our tracks. Seals lounging on the rocks below, wildflowers everywhere—no crowds, just the wind whipping our hair and the kids pretending to be pirates. I sat there for a moment, mug of tea from the thermos in hand, reflecting on how I never slow down enough back home. This was proper reset territory.

Next day, aiming for St Donats (practically on the doorstep), we veered off down a single-track lane after a "scenic route" sign caught my eye. Ended up at a hidden pebble beach you'd swear no one's found—perfect for skimming stones and a impromptu picnic. The hot tub back at the house was calling after that, with fish and chips from a local chippy washed down with local Brecon beer. Another wander took us to a forgotten woodland trail near Llantwit Major, all ancient trees and babbling streams, where we picnicked under dappled light. Got properly lost once, looping back on ourselves, but that's the joy—stumbling on a wee farm shop selling the freshest cheeses and jams, straight from folks who'd lived there forever.

Evenings were cinema room magic with popcorn and Welsh films, fire roaring. One night, after too much red wine in the hot tub, I had a quiet think about how these off-piste adventures beat any itinerary. No Instagram hordes, just us making memories in South Wales' quiet corners. If you're after a holiday where getting lost leads to the best bits, this is your spot. Can't wait to go back.
