About St Davids
I’ll never forget the drive down to St Davids – a proper white-knuckle affair after I took a wrong turn near Haverfordwest and ended up on a lane so narrow my wing mirrors were kissing the hedges. Heart in my mouth, I finally spotted the cathedral’s spire peeking over the hills, and just like that, the stress melted away. Pulling up to this spacious, comfy detached house in a quiet spot a short stroll from the city centre felt like arriving at a mate’s place rather than a holiday let. And those views of the cathedral from the bedroom windows? Pure magic, especially at dusk when it glows like something out of a storybook.

First impressions were spot on – I dumped my bags, cracked open a cuppa, and wandered into town, buzzing with that little-kid excitement of a proper getaway. St Davids might be Britain’s smallest cathedral city, but it’s bursting with characters who make it feel like the cosiest pub in the world. Take Dai the fishmonger outside the Co-op, who greeted me with a grin wider than the harbour at low tide. “New around here, eh? You’ll need some mackerel for the barbie – fresh as this morning’s tide!” He insisted on giving me a free crab claw, claiming it was “for luck against the midges.” Cheeky sod, but his tales of smuggling pilchards during the war (or so he reckoned) had me in stitches as I haggled over cockles.

The next day, I ambled over to the cathedral close and bumped into Mrs Evans, the ultimate local busybody, tending her allotment near the path. She was in her element, waving a trowel like a conductor’s baton. “You staying up at that big house by the green? Good on ya – don’t let the seagulls nick your chips!” We got chatting about her prize leeks (entered in every show from here to Fishguard), and she roped me into judging a mini veg-off with her mate from the choir. Turns out, her real passion was the ghost stories – whispers of St David himself popping back for evensong. I half-believed her when a raven squawked overhead.

Even the pub landlord at the Farmers Arms, a wiry chap called Geraint with a beard like a bird’s nest, became a highlight. Over a pint of Pembrokeshire ale, he regaled me with yarns about the time the bishop’s cat went missing and turned up in the vestry three days later, “preaching to the pigeons.” His deadpan delivery had the whole bar chuckling, and he slipped me a doggy bag of faggots “for the road back – keeps the welly giants at bay.”

Wandering the coastal path to Whitesands Beach (just a couple of miles out), I met old Tom the beachcomber, forever poking driftwood with his stick. “Seen any selkies, lad?” he winked, before sharing how he once found a message in a bottle from a shipwreck off Ramsey Island. His eyes lit up like a kid’s, and suddenly my own worries – work piling up back home, that nagging feeling I’m always chasing the next thing – felt tiny. These folks, with their wry humour and endless stories, reminded me holidays aren’t about ticking boxes; they’re about letting quirky souls like these pull you into their world.

By the time I packed up, I was gutted to leave. St Davids’ characters had turned a simple stay into something unforgettable – proof you don’t need far-flung adventures when the best tales are right on your doorstep.
