About St Davids
We'd been dreaming of this getaway for months – just me, my wife, and our two lively Labradors, escaping the daily grind for a bit of Pembrokeshire peace. The drive from Haverfordwest was meant to be a breeze, all winding lanes and sea glimpses, but wouldn't you know it, about halfway there I took a wrong turn onto some narrow farm track. Cue the classic comedy moment: me reversing into a hedge while our spaniel pup yaps like it's the end of the world, and my wife calmly sipping her thermos tea, muttering, "Told you to trust the sat-nav." We laughed it off, extricated ourselves with a farmer's helpful nudge, and arrived at this cracking seven-bedroom family holiday home on the outskirts of St Davids just as the sun dipped low.

First impressions? Blimey, what a stunner. Tucked right on the westerly edge with this jaw-dropping coastal view straight over to St Justinians lifeboat station – you could watch the waves crash and seals bob about from the garden. It's got that lived-in, characterful charm we love: spacious rooms, on-site parking (a godsend after our hedge escapade), and space for up to sixteen if we'd brought the whole clan, though it was just us four-legged lot this time. We unpacked in no time, the dogs zooming straight to the lawned garden like they'd owned it forever.

That first evening set the tone perfectly. I rustled up a massive pasta bake in the huge kitchen-diner – nothing fancy, just proper comfort food with local bread from St Davids – and we ate in the dining room by the electric fire, windows flung open to the sea breeze. Chaos ensued when one dog decided the table leg was a chew toy, but that's cottage life for you. Later, we piled into the sitting room for a rubbish rom-com on the Freeview telly, toasting marshmallows by the open fire. My highlight? Dragging a couple of glasses of wine out to the garden swim spa. That bubbling warmth under the stars, with the coast path twinkling in the distance – pure bliss. We didn't fancy a full dip in the chill, mind, but dangled our feet and chatted about nothing much.

The super-king bed in our room was heaven after that; we slept like logs, waking to birdsong and that endless sea vista. Days blurred into simple joys: a gentle stroll along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path from the doorstep, right down to the landing stage for a boat trip out to Ramsey Island – seals everywhere, and the dogs' tails wagging non-stop. We popped into St Davids, the UK's tiniest city, for a wander around the cathedral (stunning, even for non-churchy types like us) and a cosy pub lunch at The Farmers Arms – fish pie and a pint, spot on. No rushing about; just ambling back for lazy afternoons in the garden pods, reading and watching puffins on the horizon.

Looking back, it was one of those trips that makes you reflect: life's too short for five-star fuss when you've got sea views, dog-walks, and a spouse who still finds your wrong turns endearing. We left fuller-hearted, already plotting a return. If you're after relaxed family vibes with a splash of coastal magic, this is your spot.
