About St Davids
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday spot near St Davids – it was one of those trips that started with high hopes and a full boot of snacks, but quickly turned into a comedy of errors. We’d left Cardiff early, buzzing with anticipation about escaping to Pembrokeshire’s wild coast, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just as we hit the twisty country lanes. “Recalculating,” it chirped cheerfully, while I gripped the wheel, convinced we were lost in some sheep-dotted nowhere. Then, disaster: a rogue pothole sent us juddering, and my other half’s posh takeaway coffee exploded all over the passenger footwell. Cue soggy socks and me stifling giggles as we mopped up with service station napkins. By the time we spotted the quiet lane leading to the property, we were frazzled but laughing – proper road trip baptism of fire.

Pulling up to this rustic stone farmhouse felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked away down that peaceful Pembrokeshire lane, it had that instant “home for the week” vibe – cosy, unpretentious, with a front garden bursting with wildflowers that screamed coastal charm. First impressions? Bloody brilliant, despite the chaos. We tumbled out, still smelling faintly of latte, and the door creaked open to reveal a lived-in warmth that made the drive’s mishaps fade fast. I stood there for a sec, bag in hand, thinking, “This is it – proper downtime.”

St Davids, Britain’s smallest city, was just a short hop away, and we couldn’t wait to explore. That first afternoon, after dumping our stuff, we wandered into town, gobsmacked by the cathedral’s ancient spire rising like something from a storybook. It’s tiny but mighty, with those quirky independent shops selling everything from handmade fudge to arty prints – I snaffled a quirky mug that now lives on my kitchen shelf. Popped into a friendly pub for a pint and some fresh crab claws; the locals’ banter was gold, all easy smiles and tales of coastal walks. We laughed about our arrival over fish and chips that tasted of the sea, the kind you can’t get anywhere else.

Next morning, shaking off the travel gremlins, we hit the coastal path to Whitesands Bay – that sweep of golden sand and turquoise waves is pure magic, even on a breezy day. I had a daft moment bodysurfing in the shallows, emerging like a drowned rat but grinning ear to ear. Later, a gentle stroll around the cathedral close brought some quiet reflection; sitting on a bench, watching families potter about, I realised how these little escapes recharge the soul. No signal stress, just the wind and the waves whispering “slow down.”

The farmhouse itself was the perfect base – simple kitchen for lazy brekkies, a snug lounge for rainy evenings (and we had a few). We even spotted seals bobbing offshore from the garden one dusk. That messy arrival? Best icebreaker ever. Left us appreciating the simple joys – St Davids’ eateries like the one doing cracking wood-fired pizzas, galleries crammed with local talent, and those pubs where time slips away. If you’re after a slice of Wales that feels worlds away but welcoming as pie, this is your spot. We’re already plotting a return, minus the coffee carnage.
