About Tenby
After a quick cuppa we wandered the few minutes to the beach, shoes in hand, and found a patch of sand that felt as though it had been keeping our spot warm. The tide was out, the sky a washed-out blue, and suddenly there was nothing we had to do. We spread an old blanket, cracked open the paperbacks we’d brought, and let the afternoon drift by in that delicious, aimless way holidays are supposed to. Every so often one of us would glance up, watch a dog chase its own tail through the shallows, then return to the page without a word. Back at the cottage the garden caught the last of the sun, so we dragged the wooden chairs onto the patio and stayed there until our books slipped from our laps. No plans, no rush—just the low murmur of waves and the occasional gull giving us the side-eye. When hunger finally stirred we strolled into town for fish and chips, eating them straight from the paper on a bench overlooking the harbour, salt on our fingers and absolutely no need to be anywhere else. That first evening set the tone for the whole stay. We woke each morning to the same gentle light through the bedroom curtains, made toast, and carried it outside to eat in our pyjamas. Afternoons were spent between the beach and the little patio, sometimes reading the same paragraph three times because the warmth made concentration optional. I’d expected to feel restless without a list of things to tick off, yet the longer we did nothing the more content I felt. There’s a quiet sort of bravery, I realised, in letting a day simply unfold instead of trying to fill it. By the time we locked the door again, the geraniums had been righted and the case was behaving itself. We left Tenby with sand in the car and not a single regret about how little we’d done—only the happy certainty that sometimes the best part of a holiday is remembering how good it feels to slow right down. |
