About West Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to West Wales – chuckling to myself now about how it all kicked off with a classic British road trip faux pas. We’d packed the car the night before, brimming with excitement for our little coastal getaway, but halfway through the M4 crawl near Swansea, I realised I’d left the sat nav charger at home. Cue the frantic phone fiddling as we veered off towards Mumbles, rain lashing the windscreen like it was auditioning for a monsoon scene. Still, by the time we trundled into that tucked-away spot, the clouds were parting just enough to spark that proper holiday buzz. Pulling up to this gorgeous little cottage – tastefully done up with two comfy bedrooms, a cracking open-plan living area, a sunny walled garden, and a hot tub that screamed relaxation – I felt that instant “yes, this is it” glow. Perfect for us two and the dog, whatever the Welsh weather threw at us.

First morning, we laced up our boots for what I figured would be a gentle wander along Mumbles Pier. The sun was peeking out, sea sparkling like it does on those rare perfect days, and we ambled along the prom, dodging ice cream queues and waving at paddleboarders. It was pure bliss – that fresh coastal air filling your lungs, gulls squawking overhead, and the pier’s lighthouse looking ever so photogenic. We even nipped into a café for a greasy spoon brekkie, chatting with locals about their fishing tales. Feeling bold, we pushed on towards Bracelet Bay, clambering over rocks and peering into rock pools teeming with crabs. My other half was in her element, snapping pics like a pro, while I pretended not to notice the odd jellyfish washing up – nature’s warning sign, perhaps?

But oh, the weather – that great British leveller. Come afternoon, the sky turned moody faster than a toddler denied sweets. Sudden squalls had us scarpering back to the cottage, drenched and giggling about my “optimistic” lack of waterproof trousers. No matter; we piled into the hot tub under the garden shelter, bubbles churning as rain drummed the roof. It was one of those moments that make you reflect – you know, how us lot always moan about the weather, yet it’s what makes these escapes so alive. Cosy inside with tea and board games, we plotted tomorrow’s hike.

Next day dawned misty but dry, so we tackled the coastal path from Langland Bay – proper undulating stuff, with heather-strewn cliffs dropping to pebbly beaches below. The views over Swansea Bay were epic, wind whipping our cheeks as we huffed up to Highfield Cliffs. Halfway, the heavens opened again, turning our triumphant tramp into a slippery comedy of errors. I skidded arse-over-tit on mud (gently, mind – no heroics), emerging covered in muck but laughing till my sides hurt. We sheltered in a cove, sharing soggy sandwiches, before the sun cheekily reappeared for the downhill stretch. Back at the cottage, garden steaming in the evening light, we hiked our weary legs into that hot tub once more. Those weather-whipped walks? They made the stay unforgettable – a reminder that in West Wales, the best adventures are the ones that bend with the breeze. Can’t wait to go back.
