About West Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to West Wales – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked it off. We’d piled into the car in Cardiff, full of that holiday buzz, me navigating with my phone while my partner drove. About halfway, I managed to send us down a tiny lane that Google Maps swore was a shortcut, only for it to narrow into a sheep-dotted single track with hedges clawing at the mirrors. “This is it, we’re doomed,” I laughed, as we reversed for what felt like miles past a farmer who gave us a cheery wave. But we made it, emerging onto the open roads above Penclawdd on the North Gower coast, hearts racing and grinning like idiots. The anticipation built as the sea glimpses appeared – that perfect mix of relief and excitement.

Pulling up to this lovely complex of cottages perched just above the village, my first impressions were spot on. It’s got that welcoming, tucked-away charm, with everything you need without any fuss. We dumped the bags and just breathed it all in – the salty air, the distant waves, and that instant feeling of being miles from the daily grind.

What sold it for us, though, wasn’t the adventures on offer – though Gower’s beaches are tempting, and the Wales Coast Path starts right from the village for an easy wander if you fancy. No, our holiday was all about the joy of doing sod all. Lazy cottage days, that’s the ticket. We’d flop into the garden first thing, mugs of tea in hand, watching the world go by. The sun filtering through the leaves, birds cheeping, and not a soul to interrupt. I’d crack open a book – some trashy thriller I’d been saving – and lose hours without a care. My partner would nod off in a chair, newspaper over his face, and I’d sneakily nab his biscuits.

One afternoon, I caught myself just staring at the clouds drifting over the estuary, pondering how I’d turned into this contented sloth. Back home, I’m always rushing – emails, deadlines, the lot. Here? Time stretched out like toffee. We’d potter inside for lunch – cheese on toast, nothing fancy – then back out with a GandT as the light softened. Evenings were for reading by the window, the faint hum of village life below us. No grand hikes up Cefn Bryn or golf at Gower Club for us; we saved our energy for a gentle stroll to the local shop for milk and papers, chatting with locals about the tide times.

It was pure bliss slowing down like that. A gentle nudge to reflect: maybe life’s best bits are the quiet ones, the ones where you let the cottage and its garden work their magic. If you’re after a reset, this is your spot – no itinerary required. We left feeling lighter, already plotting a return for more of the same.
