About West Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to West Wales – me behind the wheel, sat-nav chirping away like it owned the road, and my mate Dave in the passenger seat munching crisps. We’d been looking forward to this farm cottage getaway for weeks, visions of lazy walks and fresh air dancing in our heads. But about halfway there, near Neath, the heavens opened and we hit a massive pothole that sent us skidding into a ditch. No damage, thank goodness, just a soggy five-minute wait for the AA while Dave cracked on about it being “character-building”. By the time we arrived in the Dulais Valley, hearts still thumping a bit, we were buzzing with anticipation – would this working farm spot live up to the hype?

Pulling up to the cottage just outside Crynant, our first impressions were spot on. Tucked away in this gorgeous rural pocket, it felt like stepping into a proper countryside hug – perfect for our gang of five, with three bedrooms and enough space to sprawl out. Set on a real live farm, it promised lazy mornings with bleating sheep as your alarm clock, and we weren’t disappointed. But honestly, what made the whole trip weren’t the views or the walks (though the mountain paths right on the doorstep were cracking), it was the quirky locals we bumped into. They stole the show.

First off, there was Farmer Huw, the chap who owns the place. We met him that first evening as he trundled past on his tractor, tipping his cap like we were long-lost cousins. “Fancy a go on the quad bikes tomorrow, lads?” he bellowed over the engine rumble. Turned out there’s a spot just a couple of miles down the road – proper muddy fun. We signed up, and Huw joined us, this wiry bloke in his sixties with stories for days. Over tea in his kitchen (miles better than our packed lunches), he regaled us with tales of the valley’s old coal-mining days, how his grandad once wrestled a rogue bull right here in Dulais. “Mind you,” he winked, “don’t tell the wife I said that – she thinks I’m soft.” We laughed till our sides hurt, covered in muck from the quads.

Then there was Mrs. Evans from the village shop in Crynant, half a mile away – a tiny powerhouse with a laugh like a foghorn. Popped in for milk and ended up chatting archery and paintball outfits nearby. “You townies need target practice before you take on my boys,” she teased, handing over welshcakes still warm from her oven. Her husband, Dai, chipped in from behind the counter, deadpan as you like: “Aye, last lot from London came back looking like dalmatians after paintball.” We booked a session, and sure enough, it was chaos – me getting splatted first, naturally.

Even at the local golf course, a quick five-minute drive, we met grizzled Ted, who claimed he’d once caddied for a pro back in the day. “Swing like this, boyo,” he demonstrated with a wonky putter, missing by a mile. His banter kept us going through the rain.

Looking back, sat here now with a cuppa, I realise I spent more time nattering with these characters than ticking off activities – and that’s the magic of places like this. They pull you in with their warmth and wit, turning a simple holiday into proper memories. If you’re after a base for adventures with a side of cracking company, this Dulais Valley cottage is the ticket. We’re already plotting a return.
