About West Wales
I’ll never forget the drive down to West Wales – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked off our holiday. We’d piled into the car in Cardiff, kids buzzing with excitement, me navigating via a dodgy phone signal, and my other half at the wheel. About halfway, just past Swansea, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us hurtling down a narrow country lane that felt more like a sheep track. “Turn left in 200 yards,” it chirped, right as we met a tractor chugging towards us, mud-splattered and unyielding. Cue a frantic three-point turn on a verge that was basically a bog, with the kids chanting “We’re stuck! We’re stuck!” from the back. Hearts racing, we finally extricated ourselves, laughing hysterically, and spotted the sign for Cwmafan. Arrival anticipation? Through the roof – we were dying for that first glimpse.

Pulling up the final steep lane to the property felt like summiting our own personal Everest. Perched at the top on a working farm, this converted farm building is the ultimate retreat for families and friends, with picturesque views from nearly every window and a tranquil setting that blends countryside charm with modern comfort, including a private hot tub and a roaring wood burner. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. The place just sat there, welcoming us with open arms after our chaotic journey, the kind of spot that makes you exhale and think, “Yeah, this is it.”

We tumbled out, bags everywhere, and the kids immediately dashed off to explore the farmyard, cooing over the chickens and a couple of curious lambs. Me? I cracked open the door, and that view hit me like a warm hug – rolling hills stretching out, dotted with sheep, and not a hint of traffic noise. The inside was spot on too: cosy corners perfect for flopping down, a kitchen that begged for bacon butty sessions, and that wood burner already stacked and ready to chase away any damp Welsh chill. We fired up the hot tub straight away (priorities!), bubbles churning as the sun dipped low, painting everything golden. Pure bliss after the road rage.

The first evening was all about unwinding. We wandered down to the nearby beach at Aberavon – it’s only a short hop, sands wide and empty, perfect for a post-mishap paddle. The kids built epic sandcastles while we munched fish and chips from a takeaway van, salt in the air and waves lapping gently. Back at the cottage, wood burner roaring, we played board games till late, the farm’s quiet hum outside like a lullaby. No grand adventures yet, just that golden glow of arrival magic.

Looking back, that sat-nav fiasco was the perfect icebreaker – a gentle reminder that holidays aren’t about flawless plans, but the messy joy of getting there. West Wales worked its spell on us from minute one, and we hadn’t even scratched the surface. If you’re after a proper reset, find a spot like this; it’ll sort you out, mishaps and all.
