About West Wales
Next morning, we laced up our boots for the 5-mile circuit south along the Beacons Way – woods giving way to open mountains, dotted with ancient pillow mounds and old homesteads that felt like stepping back in time. The sun was out, rare as hen’s teeth in Wales, and it was bliss: birdsong, wild ponies grazing, that crisp mountain air filling your lungs. We picnicked by a babbling stream, feeling like proper explorers. But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour. By afternoon, clouds rolled in thick as fog, and we dashed back as hailstones the size of marbles pelted down. Laughing like kids, soaked to the skin, we huddled in the barn with tea and biscuits, plotting tomorrow’s revenge. Day two, undeterred, we headed out on foot to Carreg Cennen Castle, just four miles away. The path wound through dramatic valleys, heather brushing our legs, and the castle ruins perched on its crag like a fairy-tale sentinel. Mist clung to the hills, turning everything ethereal, but halfway up, the wind whipped up a gale that nearly blew my hat off. We pressed on, grinning through chattering teeth – that’s the joy of these hikes, isn’t it? The unpredictability keeps you alive. At the top, peering into the castle’s depths, I had a quiet moment: staring at those timeless stones, I thought about how we rush about back home, and here I was, just walking, breathing, connected to something bigger. Made me vow to slow down more often. The weather played its next trick on our Llyn y Fan adventure – that stunning natural lake ringed by breath-taking peaks. We set off optimistic, but drizzle turned to proper rain, turning trails to slippy mud baths. Plans for a full circuit? Scrapped. Instead, we trudged a shorter loop, hoods up, slipping and sliding, emerging triumphant but caked in muck. Back at the barn, drying off by the fire, we chuckled about it – who needs perfect weather when you’ve got stories like that? Even contemplated the Dan Yr Ogof caves, half an hour’s drive, but stuck to footpaths, popping into Llandeilo six miles away for pasties and a browse when legs needed a rest. Those West Wales walks reshaped us – rain, shine, or sleet – reminding me holidays aren’t about flawless plans, but embracing the glorious chaos. Can’t wait to go back. |
